Sea Shepherd to Pay Millions to Whale Killers
Yahoo! News ^ | June 9, 2015 | Taylor Hill

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society agreed to pay $2.55 million to Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research on Monday as part of a settlement to resolve a long-standing legal battle over the anti-whaling group’s tactics against Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic.

The settlement came the same day the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Sea Shepherd’s appeal of a federal court’s finding that the group was in contempt of a court order to stay clear of Japanese whaling ships.

The activist group’s tactics at sea include throwing smoke bombs at Japanese whaling ships and using metal-reinforced ropes to damage propellers and rudders. The question is whether those tactics—which typically take place in international waters—amount to piracy, and whether a U.S. court can order those activities to be stopped if they take place outside its jurisdiction.

Sea Shepherd believes it can’t, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court upheld that it can. Now, thanks to the settlement, Sea Shepherd will be giving millions of dollars to an organization it has tirelessly battled against in a fight to save the whales.

Wow! "terrorist supporters". Really? Old goofy, fat Paul Watson, a boat load of inept hippies waddling along, slightly impeding the Japanese lawbreakers..

You sure know how to turn a phrase! Oh, wait - wasn't that what the Japanese flacks said they were? Good of you to follow their lead.

I'm not too sure what to make of you calling the FreeRepublic a "right wing" site. Seems to me that it's conservative, isn't it? Only Obama and Hillary and Jarett and the other Lefties call it "right wing".

Interesting point of view.

Did you or did you mot upthread express your support several times in unambiguous terms for the terrorist group known as Sea Sheppard? A group who has members wanted in Europe for terrorist actions?

Yes or no.

FR Is a right wing website. If it’s not, then Jim really should have that explained to him since I’m pretty sure he Officially comes down on the right wing side of the aisle. Which is where conservatism occupies political space. If he isn’t, I think it would surprise him and many of us.

Not sure if the Sea Shepherd intended to ram or just try to foul the whale carcass

I'll offer a clue to you on the dumb label. If you can't tell that the Sea Shepherd intentionally rammed that ship in that video you have more issues than just hating the Japanese 70 years after WWII ended. Good day.

They aren't terrorists just because the Japanese have said they are. ISIS, al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Red Brigade, al Fatah, the 25th of September Brigade, the Vietcong, and a host of others are actual terrorist. The Sea Shepherds are basically vigilantes, attempting to enforce an international law - or do you really believe the big English-language signs on those whaling ships marked Research?

The FreeRepublic isn't a "Right Wing" site. That's the label that Leftists use to smear conservatives. Right Wing organizations are the Nazis, the Italian Fascists, the German-American Bund and others but not us.

Remember Hillary's "Vast right Wing Conspiracy"? That was all of us objecting to her husband's lies and other crimes. We aren't right-wingers, we're constitutionalists, we're anti-tax zealots, we're against big government, and against spying on our own people, and we are firm believers in freedom.

If you are really a right-winger - that is a fan of dictatorships, you're in the wrong place.

Once again. I am not pro Japanese. I am anti-sea hippie and their actions. I didn’t write the definitions. Words have meanings. The Sea Shepherds have been declared pirates by a US court:

Everyone should keep in mind here that it was the 9th Circuit that told Sea Shepherd to go perform an anatomically impossible act on itself. How far does one have to be for that to happen?

And the SCOTUS upheld the 9th’s decision. His often does THAT happen?

However, in the meantime Sea Shepherd did somehow manage to acquire two surplus USCG Island-class cutters ...

Looks like the bat boat was under power to me.

Wouldn't surprise me...if the bat boat captain...was wanting the collision.

It’s amazing to me that someone can come on FR, openly support enviroterrorists, lie in the face of video and not get zapped into oblivion.

I don’t know how anyone can say that boat was dead in the water and believe it.

It says a lot the Sea Shepard has most of the world rooting for the whalers. That takes a special kind of stupid.

That's one judge. The Japanese have used enormous money and influence to circumvent every attempt to protect whales.

The real question to be asked is why the member nations don't enforce the laws and leave it to a private group.

It's called freedom of Speech. Some of us are capable of independent thought. I have been lucky enough to have encountered whales up close on a number of occasions and have affection for them.

Meanwhile you exhaust your time defending the law-breaking Japanese.

Ya gotta wonder.
