Interesting note: Nielsen just released their people meter radio ratings for various markets for the month of May. For the first time since Rush and Sean moved to WOR-AM, that station is now beating WABC head-to-head, both in New York city (the nation’s largest radio market), and the suburban areas (Long Island and northern New Jersey) that are surveyed as separate markets.

The only number released is the average quarter hour rating, and I don’t have numbers for specific time slots or dayparts. But overall, WOR has gained three tenths of a point since April, while WABC is down half a point. In a market as large as NYC, with dozens of stations competing for the available audience, a movement on that scale is still significant.

WOR is also being boosted by Mets baseball, and it will be interesting to see how the ratings trends evolve through the summer, into the fall and beyond that, into 2016. Talk stations tend to do better in election years, and if WOR is gaining traction, they could open up a lead on WABC in the months ahead. To be fair, neither station is anywhere close to the market leader, but the numbers are clearly not working in the favor of WABC.

More proof that Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey (which owns WABC) isn’t the sharpest tool in the radio shed. He complained that Rush’s comments about Sandra Fluke cost his company “millions,” but the Cumulus stations that still carry Rush (WMAL in Washington; KSFO in San Francisco) are doing much better than those which dropped him (like WABC).
