Top Muslim authorities in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan spoke out over the weekend against extremism, the latest examples of religious figures doing what Western governments encourage as part of a broad campaign to reject and delegitimize any link between terrorism and Islam.
In both cases, however, the authorities concerned have controversial records themselves, having drawn criticism in the past for justifying terror in the Pakistani instance and for inciting hatred of non-Muslims in the Saudi one.
Addressing students at a Saudi-affiliated Islamic school in London at the weekend, the government-appointed imam of Meccas Grand Mosque, Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Sudais, urged them to be cautious about deviant and extremist ideologies that promote violence, racial hatred and conflicts between various schools of religious thought, the kingdoms Arab News reported.
The official SPA news agency used somewhat different language in citing Sudais comments at the King Fahd Academy, saying that he warned them against being dragged behind the suspicious calls contrary to the correct and tolerant religion, or being preoccupied with any trend fueling sectarian hatreds, conflicts and disputes, or listening to the advocates of charging others and countries with disbelief, bombing and destruction.

To a Muslim, jihad is not “terrorism”. But any action taken to counter jihad IS terrorism. It’s all about how you define things.
