Suicide rate of female military veterans is called 'staggering'
Los Angeles Times ^ | 08 June 2015 | By Alan Zarembo

ew government research shows that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women, a startling finding that experts say poses disturbing questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who serve in the armed forces..

Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers because men generally are far more likely than women to commit suicide.

"It's staggering," said Dr. Matthew Miller, an epidemiologist and suicide expert at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research. "We have to come to grips with why the rates are so obscenely high."

Is this a new trend that started after opening more combat roles to females?

sounds to me that whatever affect military service has on the propensity to commit suicide effects women the same as men and overcomes women’s general predisposition not to commit suicide.

I distrust stats from the Regime. May or my not be true.

That would imply the Left was wrong about combat roles for women - which they will never admit.

Perhaps the tendency to suicide is not due to sex, but the trials of combat situations. So as women in the military experience the true horrors of war, they are scarred by it as much as their male counterparts.

Are you trying to imply that females might not be able to handle combat stresses?!

No?

OK, then, I will.

We have turned the military into a kid’s chemistry set type of social experiment. This has the potential for drastic consequences, both for the nation’s security and for the safety and well being of the human guinea pigs.

If life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That's why I propose the following alternative headline:

Suicide rate of male vets approaching that of female vets

"...thoughts...?"

Yes. If it's produced by the Obama administration, it must reflect an agenda. It could be as simple as the usual "let's raise taxes and spend more money" or "we need to take the hoi polloi's guns away". Or it could be something more than that.

I think those who have been in combat see things it is very difficult for the human being to handle. Some can, whether it's their faith, their upbringing or who knows what. Others find it more than they can bear.

Combat is ugly....period.

Perhaps its not about being involved in combat that leads to suicide, but being involved in pointless combat for an incompetent and unappreciative administration that leads to suicide.

I wonder how many of the suicidal women are parents? My neice has PTSD from her service as an emergency room nurse, in Mosul. But she has children to raise, and a husband, and her Christian faith. She also takes her counseling and medications, as prescribed. I wonder if women with children hang on better.

The kind of woman who would seek a military career also happens to be more likely to commit suicide. Peoples brains are wired differently.

Agree. That coupled with the Feminists pushing women to do something they really don't want. Guilting some women into joining the Military when they would really rather do something else. Like in the 60-70's. Likely the majority of women really would like to stay home and raise their own children, but were made to feel worthless unless they were Superwoman.....working and mothering and doing it all. And the thanklessness from the top down in this country seems to make even being in the Military less deserving of praise (which is actually far more praiseworthy than any other job in this country). This Admin praises the takers far ahead of the makers and the doers, as if living off others' accomplishments/income is laudable. (And no, I'm not talking about those who truly cannot do for themselves; I am talking about those who cannot be bothered to do for themselves). I hope our situation isn't hopeless yet.
