Immigrants do jobs Americans won't do. Except at Disney. Laid off workers to train foreigners

Disney is firing tech employees and replacing them with (legal) foreigners.

[A]bout 250 Disney employees were told in late October that they would be laid off. Many of their jobs were transferred to immigrants on temporary visas for highly skilled technical workers, who were brought in by an outsourcing firm based in India. Over the next three months, some Disney employees were required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.

But the layoffs at Disney and at other companies, including the Southern California Edison power utility, are raising new questions about how businesses and outsourcing companies are using the temporary visas, known as H-1B, to place immigrants in technology jobs in the United States.

According to federal guidelines, the visas are intended for foreigners with advanced science or computer skills to fill discrete positions when American workers with those skills cannot be found. Their use, the guidelines say, should not “adversely affect the wages and working conditions” of Americans. Because of legal loopholes, however, in practice, companies do not have to recruit American workers first or guarantee that Americans will not be displaced

As you can see, illegal aliens are not the only problem we face.  But rather than getting into a debate about legal immigration, I want to touch on a different point.

It isn’t just at Disney.

The past five years have seen tens of thousands of engineers and IT professionals laid off and having trouble finding work, even as technology executives complain they can’t find the right high tech skills and therefore need a major increase in the number of H1-B guestworkers. Those engineers and IT workers who still have jobs have seen their salaries remain essential remain flat since 2000.

Ok, now the first day you’re here by yourself type in PWRDWNSYS and impress your new boss.

Actually watched through a window looking into the computer room when a veteran computer operator showed a new employee the command. Then accidentally hit the enter key himself and killed the AS400/iSeries system in the middle of the day at the national headquarters of a large sporting goods chain. Took close to a half hour for all the subsystems to shut down and then another hour or so to bring the system back up. Fun times.

These companies have to meet their Affirmative Action quotas somehow...

This is the way they do it. And, they don’t have to pay Obamacare or Federal Employment Taxes on these employees. And it is ENCOURAGED by the Obama Administration. It’s a grand slam for these companies.

It seems to me that if you were called in and told you were being laid off but you must FIRST train your replacement, everyone should right then walk out and leave them in the lurch.
Tell the boss, “You hired them, you train them! I’m out of here!”.

Keep it up. Fertile ground for union organizers.

My computer tech friend and his whole department were laid off. He also had the added indignity of having to train his replacement before he had to clean out his desk and return his washroom key.

For this father of four, a nice touch was that he trained the new hire via computer, phone, etc. from Florida.....and the happy recipient of the training was learning the ropes of the job in his native country.....EGYPT !

I know there are a few exceptions, but the tech industry overwhelmimgly leftist and support Obama, illegal immigrants, etc.
They have been perfectly happy for blue collar America to be outsourced.

Welcome to the party.

I thought the problem was Americans won’t pick tomatoes or slaughter chickens.

“Tell the boss, “You hired them, you train them! I’m out of here!”.”

Couldn’t agree more.

Quitting means no severance and no unemployment.

... everyone should right then walk out and leave them in the lurch

That might be emotionally satisfying but costly. By quitting you would most likely forfeit any severance package as well as become ineligible for unemployment benefits.

I know a mechanic who worked at a factory and when he was told they were closing and the machines used there was going to Red China and he had to train them on how to use it. He got so mad at his boss, he just yelled back, “you are laying me off and in addition making me train some ‘g-—’ to replace me! I’m outta here!” He then went otthe lunchroom, got his stuff, then to his car and gone. Not only this creates uncertainty in the economy but a lot of resentment and anger too.

“Over the next three months, some Disney employees were required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.”

Same thing happened here with the wetback invasion of the
80’s and 90’s. The criminal employers were bringing in these
“no speaky no english” fresh from the box van, literally, wetbacks
and we were told to “Turn them out”. That meant to teach them
to do what we do with no apprenticeship. Most of us didn’t
catch on until they started laying off the helpers and
laborers and replacing them with “no speaky no english” fresh from the box van wetbacks. I never hire or ever used
wetbacks and I loose 80% of the business that I could do
because of it.

GTE then Verizon did the same thing starting in the late 90’s. 2,000 jobs from the Tampa Data Center alone.

I hear all about fair trade coffee etc. No one in the marketplace gives a damn about fair trade engineering or tech services.

That is extending to legal documents, graphic design, and other trades. All of it being imported through the interwebs with no import duty.

I've run into several situations now where members of the stateside skeleton crew (at low wage, no less) are expected to transliterate from broken English (Chinese, Hindi, etc.) into something comprehensible by the higher ups.

They don't want to work with the offshored labor force. They don't want to hear about the issues. "Dammit, I don't care how but make it work! It saves us money!!!"

Immigrants do jobs Americans won't do... should always be followed by "at the wages offered".
