It has been my experience that Large charities are the worst. National Red Cross, National ASPCA, Wounded Warrior Project are some examples.
Just enter “(Charity Name) Form 990” in a search engine. and look for the PDF file.
(Form 990 is an IRS form for tax exempts.)
enter “Red Cross Form 990” following results:
Red Cross FY2011
Total Revenue $3,154,538,043
Grants paid $212,460,308 6.7%
Salaries $1,723,401,133 54%
Other expenses $1,393,292,266 44%
notes:
1) notice total is 104%, line 19 of Form Revenue less expenses is minus $174,615,664.
2) Expenses include travel, office costs, advertising, etc.
Finally, Local Red Cross Chapters, Local ASPCA animal shelters, Local Veteran Groups, etc. do a lot better with your money.
No doubt about that ! They're the only group to get mine. Most range from worthless to counterproductive.
I am guessing this is not surprising.
Salvation Army has always been our charity of choice.
My family has not trusted the Red Cross since the 1950’s or so when after tornadoes ripped through several towns in MI. They were charging the victims that just lost their houses for a cup of coffee.
If I had money to donate to a charity it would be to one like Convoy of Hope based out of Springfield MO, that uses almost all of the money donated to actually use towards helping instead of lining their own pockets or “fundraising” fees.
Before donating people need to look up what % actually goes to helping. Bet most would be shocked how little big name “charities” actually spend helping the victims of disasters or what ever they say it is going towards.
We have a local thrift store that helps locally. We support them by shopping at the store and donating items.
We also like the Salvation Army.
$500 mil for six permanant houses? That’s $83,333,333.34 per house. Those must be some nice piles of bricks. I’d like one.
HEY! Thanks for the heads-up!! I missed this!!
Trust all is well with you and yours, aposiopetic
