Federal investigators looking into the Amtrak derailment that killed eight people and injured scores of others in Philadelphia last month are trying to determine whether the engineer was using his cellphone when his train approached a curve at more than twice the speed limit.

I met a fellow just a few weeks ago at a church event who had just retired as an amtrak engineer. So of course I asked him what caused the accident. He went to great length to tell me how many safeguards are in place; it must have been the engineer “texting.”

He plugged his long dongle into the phone to charge it. The dongle had so much juice in it that it it sped up the train on the turn.

That should be extremely easy and fast to determine via a subpeona to his cell phone plan company. This is all kept in data logs. It is either a clear yes or no that he was using his phone.
