CARSON CITY — The Nevada Assembly late Sunday approved Gov. Brian Sandoval’s $1.1 billion package of new and extended taxes, embracing the popular Republican governor’s ambitious education agenda and determination to position Nevada’s workforce for a high-tech economy.

On a 30-10 vote, the Assembly amended Senate Bill 483, the so-called “sunset bill” that also adds a $1-per-pack increase in cigarette taxes, with provisions of Assembly Bill 464, Sandoval’s latest tax compromise that includes a business gross receipts “commerce tax” imposed on revenue of $4 million or more.

Sandoval, who lobbied hard for his tax plan, praised the Assembly’s action.

“I am incredibly proud of the men and women of the Assembly who today affirmed that Nevada is ready to lead,” Sandoval said in a statement. “This vote moves us one step closer to cementing the legacy of improving public education by both raising accountability as well as increasing investment in order to suit the needs of generations to come.”

The bill was immediately sent to the Senate, which is scheduled to vote on it Monday morning.

PASSIONATE DEBATE

Debate in the Assembly was passionate on both sides of the issue. A vocal group of anti-tax Republicans urged their colleagues to delay the vote or defeat it, arguing that supporting the tax hike would go against the will of voters.

Opponents called the tax plan a margins tax in disguise and reminded the body that voters overwhelming rejected a gross receipts tax in November.

“The voters voted no back in November to the margins tax,” said Assemblywoman Shelly Shelton, R-Las Vegas. “The people of Nevada do not want this and I implore my colleagues to vote no.”

Assemblyman Brent Jones, R-Las Vegas, said a yes vote was betraying constituents who elected them.

Could someone explain how INCREASING TAXATION positions a state for ANY kind of an improved economy??? This just wreaks of liberalism and the smell of ‘RINOism’.

Governor Deal in Georgia also championed the largest tax increase in Georgia history with the latest transportation bill. With Republicans like these, who needs democrats.

A Republican pushing hard to raise taxes.

If Jeb craps out I think the RINOS have found their guy.

Taxing business gross receipts on revenues over $4 million is a certain way to chase away business. The $4 million mark is chump change for most serious businesses. The tax will easily wipe away any profit margins and make it necessary to move the business out of NV. The pending water crisis is reason enough to make an exit now.

I live in N Nevada. Sandoval is crying for more school spending-—when school attendance is dropping in my county. Of course—there are more illegals coming into Las Vegas & Clark County each minute.

The Margins Tax was rejected across the state in last November’s election-—78% to 22%. This state has more registered Democrats than Republicans, so everyone was unhappy with the Margins Tax——which was a tax on GROSS RECEIPTS—regardless of your profits. Sandoval also didn’t let many taxes SUNSET—he is continuing them for infinity. So much for his understanding of the word SUNSET!!!!

He is being completely TONE DEAF to all of those voters.

With Harry Reid retiring, perhaps Sandoval thinks he can replace Reid-—but there are many employers & citizens—as opposed to all the illegals Reid has allowed & encouraged to come to Nevada—who will not forget Sandoval’s actions.

The economy here was just starting to revive.....and this could kill many of the prospective companies which were thinking of coming here.

This state had the highest unemployment rate & highest foreclosure rate for many years. Now, this cold stop all the interest of companies coming here.

With so many Dot-Com companies swirling around, they can GO ANYWHERE——Not like the Gold/copper/silver mines in this state.

We are not happy with RINO Sandoval as Conservatives in this state. There already is a 3% TRANSFER tax on the sale of any real estate here. That is equal to the cost of a real estate agent to represent me. WAY TOO HIGH.

In last fall’s elections—he stiffed the various Republican groups around the state & required those groups to send all the money they had raised for candidates to be sent to Carson City for Sandoval to redistribute. Not a penny went to the local candidates it was raised for. Republican groups are not happy about that, either.

He is losing support with Conservatives in this state.

Another RINO Governor for tax increases. Those of us here in Michigan voted down Rick Snyder’s tax hike by an 80-20 margin.

Just found this little nugget...

State Sen. Joe Hardy, R-Boulder City, called the effort and the governor’s education agenda that includes hundreds of millions of dollars in new funding and sweeping reforms “monumental.”

Hardy said he is proof it’s possible to be a Republican and vote for taxes.

“You can vote for a tax … and still get re-elected,” said Hardy, a reference to anti-tax conservatives who condemned the measure in the Assembly as a betrayal of Republican principles.
