Powerful earthquake strikes off eastern Japan; no tsunami threat

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck 194 kilometres off Japan's coast, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS), but there were no immediate reports of damage, public broadcaster NHK said.

The quake, which hit off Japan's Bonin Islands, reportedly rocked buildings in Tokyo as it built in intensity about 8:30pm local time (9:30pm AEST).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: "There is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth."

The USGS reported the epicentre was approximately 874 kilometres south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean, while the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5 at a depth of 590 kilometres.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said there were no abnormalities at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant following the quake.

The runways at Tokyo's Narita airport were operating normally but the high-speed bullet train service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted due to a power outage, according to NHK.

More to follow.

The Bonin Islands are where Bush 41 crashed in WWII. I don’t think Iwo Jima is technically part of the Bonins, but it’s close enough. It would be the equivalent of a massive earthquake occurring 20 miles underneath Bermuda, which is as far from DC as the Bonins are from Tokyo.

I havent taken the time to verify that one but I havent read about it being a “false positive” as reported by the now thorougly discredited L.A.TImes Quakebot...which has had 2 utter failures in the last 24 hours...

The USGS says that the occurrence of 8.0 + earthquakes has been unusually high since 2004 but within the historical statistical range. Of course there are articles out there predicting doom and disaster because of global warming. However the cannot provide believable mechanics for a 20 cm raise in the oceans to cause these quakes and even the sea rise is iffy.

You post:”I havent taken the time to verify that one but I havent read about it being a “false positive” as reported by the now thorougly discredited L.A.TImes Quakebot...which has had 2 utter failures in the last 24 hours...”

My daughter, who got woke up by the shake - lives on Kodiak Island. Kodiak got quite a shake from it - epicenter 70 miles NNW from Chirikof Island which is just off the tail of Kodiak.

My daughter is the one I got the alert from. The Islanders got text alerts - and then were relieved to get another text saying no tsunami eminent...along with this - epicenter 70 miles NNW from Chirikof.

It’s impossible not to think there is a relationship even when they are some distance apart and on different fault systems. They are all tied to the same subduction fault. This last 7.8 quake was extremely deep and seems to follow on the shallow quakes that did so much damage.
