MICHELLE O TO GO: Food trucks deliver school lunches to students during summer break

PAUL, Minn. – Government-sponsored food trucks will be stalking students this summer with the goal of giving out thousands of “healthy” free lunches officials don’t trust parents to provide.

Officials at St. Paul public schools recently announced they’re working with the local food bank Second Harvest to dispatch a mobile food truck to expand locations offering students free lunches during the summer. Last year the district supplied 71 locations, and the truck will help to add another 10 to 15 in 2015, KSTP reports.

The district’s director of nutrition services, Stacy Koppen, said the truck will drive around to different locations between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to help feed the city’s needy youngsters. The truck will track down students at “spots like suggested basketball courts or fields where kids like to play,” according to the news site.

The very expensive-looking specially rigged step van features a billboard with grinning teens alongside the message “Kids and teens: Get your free meals here.” The district apparently didn’t offer the details on how the new program is financed, or how much the truck cost, and the news station didn’t bother to ask. School officials said the truck will be manned by volunteers.

Koppen said the district serves 29,000 lunches a day during the school year, but only 6,000 a day during the summer, so officials reasoned a truck is necessary to make sure students aren’t starving.

“Time and again, we such a steep decline that we wonder, ‘Where are these children going? Are they getting the healthy, nutritious food they need for their health and academic success?’” Koppen told KTSP.

“Officials at St. Paul public schools recently announced they’re working with the local food bank Second Harvest to dispatch a mobile food truck to expand locations offering students free lunches during the summer.”

Oddly, the article fails to mention the amount of federal dollars to this free lunch program.

Stories like this show the natural progression of an economy where fewer and fewer people are actually involved in any kind of productive work. When that happens, even ordinary, mundane things like preparing breakfast or lunch for your kids gets transformed into a massive bureaucratic undertaking.

For every "free lunch" that is provided to a kid in school, there is an entire industry of food producers and a giant bureaucracy of school employees working to figure out how to get the government to feed the damn kid 35 meals a day.

Families get more money to spend per person in food stamps than I (a normal person without gov handouts) budget for food. Besides that, the young 'uns are getting free breakfast and lunch and healthy snack in school. Now there handing out free meals when they aren't in school.

So why don't they have to pay for the meals with food stamps?

Government-sponsored

No, you mean the government theft of my hard earned tax dollars taking food out of my children's mouths. Never mind welfare was supposed to feed those kids so they're getting double benefits.

Can’t feed your kids ? You shouldn’t have had any. Permanent situation ? Go to jail at nominal wages until your kids are fed or until a charity (NOT goobermint) picks up your tab.

if these parents are not feeding their children with food stamps then the state needs to remove the child because the parent is neglecting them. I don’t really believe this as liberals are just handing out free stuff for votes

Next, they will be feeding the “children” until they are 25. Impossible, you say? Fifty years ago, who would have believed any of this could happen?

This has got to stop. Big government is overreaching time and time again. When did it stop being the parent’s or guardian’s responsibility to feed and care for their children and start being the government’s. Besides, parents on welfare programs already get food for this purpose, right?

I wonder if each lunch will come with a toy like a Mickey D “happy meal”? I certainly hope so. Parents already know it’s the toy, not the meal that’s important, right?.

And while I’m on the subject and in the spirit of the moment, why not have the FCC give the starving poor a computer, Internet broadband access, and subsidize Mickey D’s or Domino’s to deliver hot lunches down to the ghetto on demand 24x7. After all, it’s their Constitutional right to expect you and I, the working poor, to feed their fatherless kids while they sit around on their lazy a$$es watching Jerry Springer reruns and eating their kid’s lunches.

There, I feel better, don’t you?

The government is acknowledging that the worst place for an urban minority child is with the animals that “birthed” them; whites would be locked up/have their children seized if they treated (or should I say “ignored”) their offspring the way those that breed golden-ticket welfare bastards for cash do.

Rather than have these “parents” held to account, and knowing they simply won’t feed their children anyway, the gubmint uses our money to feed them (twice - via food stamps and schools).
