Christian beheads jihadist in Syria revenge killing: monitor

A Syrian Christian fighter has beheaded an Islamic State group (IS) militant to avenge people "executed" by the jihadists in northeastern Syria, a monitor said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the incident took place on Thursday in Hasakeh province, where IS holds large areas of the countryside.

According to the monitor, the Christian fighter, a member of the minority Assyrian community, found the jihadist in the local village of Tal Shamiram.

"He took him prisoner and when he found out he was a member of IS, the Assyrian fighter beheaded him in revenge for abuses committed by the group in the region," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

The Observatory is based in Britain but has covered the Syrian conflict since it broke out four years ago thanks to a network of sources inside the country.

The Christian was fighting in the ranks of Kurdish forces who earlier this month drove IS out of more than a dozen Assyrian villages the jihadists had captured in Hasakeh.

IS has carried out a wave of abuses in areas it controls in both Syria and Iraq, including public beheadings, mass executions, enslavement and rape.

Ghost, I agree with you. Lethal action in immediate defense --- against an aggressor in the act of aggression --- can be just. Deadly force on the part of police can be just. The death penalty can be just. Death-dealing by the military can be just.

Private revenge is another matter altogether, because it is never justice to be judge, jury, and executioner to a person you have already stopped, disarmed, captured.

Chain him in a chair and let the police come take him. Better this, than a do-it-youself butchery.

Otherwise you've recruited one more person to ISIS' Satanism ---- yourself.

No one on this thread should be rejoicing. If he killed him in self-defense, fine. A beheading is not self-defense. This is shameful.

It's a pre-emptive tactic to defend against future beheadings and abuse of Christians. You should be cheering this.

This kind of action is the only thing they understand. If enough are killed, they will get the message that people are fed up with their actions. More power to them. It is way past time for being nice.

okkkkkk I don’t see a problem here. Just justice has been served. An ISIS member just became a WAS member. =)

I can’t believe what I am reading on this thread. I thought everyone thought beheading was a barbaric and evil act. Now I learn that most are fine with it so long as they agree with the reason.

France discontinued the use of the guillotine in 1977. I wouldn't say the French were barbaric and evil until then. It's just another method of execution. Traditionally, it's been one of the least painful when done right, with a guillotine or a headsman's axe, because death is instantaneous. What's barbaric about ISIS isn't how they kill enemy combatants - it's what they do to non-Muslim non-combatants, as well as Muslim civilians who disagree with their ideology.

Instead of beheading them, I’d prefer to shoot them in the nuts so they could feel some pain for awhile.

I'm sure we can find some other way to get it where it needs to go.

Vlad the Impaler had a horrific but efficient way of protecting Christians in Europe from invading Ottoman muslims. He had been held hostage by the Turks for some 8 years, and this probably fueled his desire for revenge. He fought an eye for an eye by impaling many on stakes, often a long torturous death. Sometimes you need to put fear into the enemy, especially one who is barbaric.

I don’t think France is a good example of anything except maybe skin and fragrance products. Decorating maybe.

Regardless, the guy didn’t have a guillotine, he was not a skilled executioner, and he chose that type of death specifically for revenge.

You lose the high ground on moral issues when you start participating in the evil. We did not take German soldiers captive and give them a taste of their own death camp medicine. They deserved it but we didn’t. After the war there were trials and some were sentenced to death. It was not revenge. It was justice.

Just wait until the federal government instigates armed rebellion in our own country.

When the gloves come off, acts of barbarism will be commonplace and not limited to either “side”. Our current state of civility will be left behind instantly.

They must be destroyed militarily, politically, and ideologically.

In this manner Reagan, Walesa, and Pope John Paul II accomplished the destruction of the Eastern Bloc.

I agree that it can be a defensive measure to teach an evil enemy that their outrages can be repaid in kind. Some Nazis thought Dresden was beyond measured retaliation. But I’m pretty sure Chrurchill’s response would have been, “You should have left Coventry alone.”

You lose the high ground on moral issues when you start participating in the evil.

Moral high ground during WWII was strictly circumscribed. This was how millions of German and Japanese civilians ended up dead while their cities were firebombed. Japan was nuked. Unrestricted submarine warfare (Operation Starvation) in the Pacific was meant to starve Japan into surrender. Ultimately, ISIS's Christian adversaries are struggling to survive against an enemy that, without provocation, has set out to exterminate them. The fact that they are fighting this kind of defensive war means that whatever their means, they have basic morality - the right not to be killed simply for existing - on their side.

Further, unlike American troops, these men don't serve tours of duty, then go back for months of R&R. They are in for the duration. They don't get internet service, all the movies they can watch, hot chow and cold beer on tap and air-conditioned quarters. It's misery on the front lines 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, until they are killed or maimed. I'd cut these men a little slack.

A beheading is not self-defense.

Any killing of any male Muslim over ten years of age is merely preemptive self-defense. Doing it by beheading and hopefully with an application of pork products is a warning to the others.
