They scattered, and it killed one of them. I think if the pair of hikers that had originally encountered it had scared it (instead of piquing its curiosity), that might have ended differently.

That's reminiscent of the old joke ending "I don't have to outrun the bear; I just have to outrun YOU!"

Very funny; years ago I used to walk with a co-worker after lunch, sometimes through a crappy area. He asked if I could outrun some thugs lounging nearby, and I said, “No, but I’ll outrun you...”
