That's kind of a dumb comparison. But back to the original question, 90% of abortions are done in the first trimester. Two thirds of those are done before 9 weeks. Ultrasound isn't going to show much of anything. Restrict it, ban it, make abortion as hard as legally possible to obtain, I'm fine with that. But requiring someone who is a few weeks pregnant to get an ultrasound isn't going to force them to change their mind and is only a present for the ultrasound industry.

He did say ultrasounds are “just a cool thing out there” while defending a law forcing them on women.

And his very next sentence after that statement was, “We just knew if we signed that law, if we provided the information, that more people if they saw that unborn child would, would make a decision to protect and keep the life of that unborn child.”

So I really don’t see the quote in this story as taken out of context.

People Who Don’t Want Women to See Ultrasounds of their Babies – What Are They Thinking?

He’s a really nice guy. George Leventhal, Montgomery County Maryland Council President, loves puppies. Presumably he likes babies…born ones, that is.

What motivates a nice guy like George, to want to impede women seeing their babies’ ultrasounds, what are his thought processes? Ultrasounds aren’t exactly cute, but people do get excited about them. We can’t presume to know George’s thinking, but it’s still important to try to understand what people who take his position have in mind.

It may be true, not necessarily in George’s case, but on average, that anti-ultrasound people know that if women see their babies, they’re not going to want to abort them.

You have a great power in your ability to ponder deeply to gain insight into abortion enthusiasts' state of mind. It’s very important, because what progressives say, they intend to put into action. Ivory Tower ravings of past generations of academics are now mandatory United States Government policy. If they say blood will flow in the streets, or in doctors’ offices, you might want to pay special attention to what they have in mind.

Virginia passed a law requiring a mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound a few years ago and it was a public-relations disaster for them and probably cost them in the next election round. The Democrats are already getting ready to label Walker anti-education. Get ready for the anti-women ads as well.

They labeled him anti-education when he ran the first time. And education funding and support is a bigger deal in WI than in the country as a whole.

A LOT of things caused the boondoggle in Virginia. Not just that one issue. Numerous states have similar laws with no blowback. RFRA was not even controversial when it passed atthe Fed level and in a score of states until it blew up in Indiana. Sometimes it is just a matter of timing.

Grossly Misrepresenting Virginia's Proposed Ultrasound Law

"Ultrasound laws are fairly common in the realm of abortion politics: 22 states already have them on the books. But the proposed Virginia law--which would require an ultrasound to be performed 24 hours before an abortion and would give the mother the opportunity to view it--has been presented by pro-abortion activists, and even some in the mainstream media, as an unusually invasive regulation imposed on women. Slate's Dahlia Lithwick, for example, wrote that the ultrasound requirement amounted to state-mandated rape. But as Commentary's Alana Goodman reports, "ultrasounds are already part of the abortion procedures at Virginia Planned Parenthoods."

According to a recording from Planned Parenthood's abortion hotline, a doctor will perform an ultrasound on a woman prior to performing a surgical or a medical (i.e. drug-induced) abortion:

“Patients who have a surgical abortion generally come in for two appointments. At the first visit we do a health assessment, perform all the necessary lab work, and do an ultrasound. This visit generally takes about an hour. At the second visit, the procedure takes place. This visit takes about an hour as well. For out of town patients for whom it would be difficult to make two trips to our office, we’re able to schedule both the initial appointment and the procedure on the same day.

Medical abortions generally require three visits. At the first visit, we do a health assessment, perform all the necessary lab work, and do an ultrasound. This visit takes about an hour. At the second visit, the physician gives the first pill and directions for taking two more pills at home. The third visit is required during which you will have an exam and another ultrasound.”

In other words, a woman seeking an abortion is already required by standard practice to show up for a separate doctor's visit and receive an ultrasound. A woman seeking an abortion would only be affected by this law in one way: the doctor would offer her the chance to view the ultrasound.

It's not just pro-abortion activists who have left out this important context regarding the ultrasound legislation. Bob Lewis of the Associated Press wrote last week that the "ultrasound legislation would constitute an unprecedented government mandate to insert vaginal ultrasonic probes into women as part of a state-ordered effort to dissuade them from terminating pregnancies, legislative opponents noted." But the Associated Press reporter completely failed to exercise due diligence and never noted that Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion practitioner in America, already performs an ultrasound prior to performing an abortion."
