Pedophilia has a specific meaning based on biology. It refers to attraction to children who have not yet entered puberty or reached sexual maturity.
Before/after puberty is a biological/medical concept. “Legal age” is entirely a cultural concept, subject to change as the culture changes. To my mind attraction to young but sexually mature people is a good deal less inherently disordered than to a true child. IOW, being attracted to a 13 year old girl is something very different from being attracted to a 5 year old girl. Both are wrong, in our society, but one is much worse.
To show how much attitudes and legalities on this issue can change in a historically brief period, here’s a table of age of consent laws over time.

In 1880 the legal age of consent in all US states was either 10 or 12, except for DE, where it was 7!
I’m glad our attitudes have changed on this, and I fully support prosecution and punishment of those who break our present laws. But do you seriously contend that a sexual relationship with a sexually mature 13 year old is morally or medically equivalent to one with a 5 year old?

I have no problems with Epstein going to jail for that. In fact, from what I’ve read of the case it looks like his prosecution and sentence were “influenced” to be lenient.
I just object to calling any sexual involvement with a sexually mature person pedophilia. Because then you don’t have anything to call the guy who’s into six year old or two year old little girls.
Per the law, in many states involvement with a girl who’s 17 years and 11 months is “sexual contact with a minor.” While it’s illegal and that’s fine with me, surely there’s a difference from engaging in similar activities with a toddler.
This is similar to the way calling everybody who says something you don’t like “racist” means you don’t have a word left to use for real racists.
A distinction without a difference. Both are morally the same and deserve the death penalty.
Medically, it depends on the specific act.

Words are important. If you use words that refer to more horrific crimes to refer to less-horrific crimes, you degrade our ability to talk about the worse crimes.
I find it difficult to comprehend that reasonable adults are incapable of seeing a moral difference between sex with a child who’s body is not physically ready for the act, and sex with an adolescent who is fully physically mature but which our society has decided to classify as legally under age.
Some things are Bad. Other things are Worse. Seems to me when we refuse to acknowledge this, we lose an important distinction.
I realize that in God’s eyes, all Sin is Sin. But for human purposes we have the death penalty for some crimes, life sentences for some, and varying prison terms for others. This lines up with appropriately distinguishing between Bad and Worse.
Any one citing wiki as a source for psychiatric diagnoses had better be aware that the current version of DSM(IV) is a corruption of earlier parameters mostly notably in the redefinition of sexual disorders brought about by selecting sexual deviants among the psyc community to edit the work. PC attitudes acquiesced in the removal of the abnormal and relocating them in the spectrum of normal behaviors.
Notice the age creep downward in the comments. As you stated, it’s a tell of at least of an amoral core.

Like many people that get caught in their own trap, they just change the initial set of facts to suit their new global warming, cooling, disruption whatever...
