Spilling the truth on the fight for a $15 minimum wage

Did The New York Times just inadvertently tell us what the real goal of the raise-the-minimum-wage campaign is?

A Times editorial last week cheered Los Angeles’ enactment of a $15-an-hour minimum wage — but noted that restaurants, particularly fast-food joints, don’t like it. Said The Times: “The restaurant industry . . . will not go down without a fight.”

We didn’t think that bringing down an entire industry was what the campaign for a $15 minimum was supposed to be about. Oops.

Back in March, we noted that a similar hikein Seattle’s minimum wage was leading to a spate of local restaurant closings, given that labor costs account for 36 percent of the average restaurant’s earnings.

Case in point: Z Pizza, which has to shut down — putting all 11 employees out of work — because its owner can’t afford the higher labor costs. Ritu Shah Burnham says she tried layoffs, cutting hours, price hikes and not paying herself — to no avail.

“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” - Was it Obama who said that and Marx said, “When you spread the wealth around it’s good for everyone.”? Or is it the other way around?

The brats just killed their own future. There will be business closings, reduced hours, significate price increases, automation brought in, etc...

They just don’t get the they are not the most important creatures in the world and deserve everything they demand. They also don’t seem to understand their jobs are not desgned to be able to raise a family, that they are designed for people without college degrees and that their pay is commensurate with that and sets the baseline that determines what the cost of most things is based on.

They shot themselves in the foot by being led by the community activists and union leaders and obviously didn’t theink any of this through ti its conclsuiom which IS to be expected because they are almost always selfish and self-centered like The One they elected...twice.

I know what the Times is up to... and here's the solution”

Raise the wages of people working in upscale restaurants (where liberal elites eat) to $200 and hour.

The New York Times isn't trying to destroy all restaurants - just the ones the middle class eats at. THEIR restaurants will be just fine...

given that labor costs account for 36 percent of the average restaurant’s earnings.

Labor counts as an expense not an earning. The writer meant "consumes" and did not see the difference.

That is discrimination! The NY Slime will never go for that! Every restaurant should pay their employees 200 an hour as it is only "fair." No wait, does Pinch pay all his employees 15/hour? Would like to know, and why stop there? How about 200/hour as you suggest? PS: Please have Pinch explain the definition of "fair." Thank you. s/

Seem to remember a ‘help wanted’ ad kicking around on behalf of the ‘National $15.00 per hour minimum wage coalition’.

The ‘irony’ of it was they were willing to pay $10.5 per hr to work on behalf of the Minimum $15.00 wage.

15 an hour will be a great lesson the young people in this country need to learn...

There are consequences for not understanding basic economic theories...
