Gen X grew up during the “duck and cover” period? I don’t think so. They stopped teaching that in the 70s if not sooner.
I'm genX and we did duck and cover "nuke" drills up to about 1979/80 when I was in the 8th grade. Most people agree that 64/65 onward is GenX.
After that it was "tornado drills" but it was the same procedure. We also were subjected to the media drum beat that Reagan was going to either start or provoke a nuclear war all the way until I was out of High School.
I'm Gen X, born in 1969. I don't remember doing any of those drills in school. Of course, Nampa, Idaho wasn't a likely nuclear target at the time, though Mountain Home AFB about 70 miles SSE of us may have been.
I was born in 1943 and started "kindergarten" at age 4. KG was 2 years, rather like day care, more socialization than academics.
Finished 12th grade in 1961. During those 14 years we were never taught duck and cover. Never had tornado drills either. We did have three "surprise" fire drills every year, that was about all the disaster drill we got.
