Iraq roils in a maelstrom: ISIS now controls Ramadi, a new prime minister is in charge, Shiite-Sunni bloodshed flows, and a U.S.-led coalition is back, this time executing airstrikes in Iraq.
The saga of Iraq is, as an analyst put it, "a rather straightforward but sad story" since the U.S. military left the country at the end of 2011, only to find itself returning in a smaller way.
The fall of Ramadi to ISIS this week strikes many as a milestone because the city is the capital of Iraq's biggest province and because U.S. troops heroically fought insurgents there in the mid-2000s.
Some politicians feel the U.S. withdrawal of troops was a mistake, though public opinion favored it then.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Too late for that now," said Paul Salem of the nonpartisan Middle East Institute.
After almost 4,500 Americans were killed and more than 30,000 injured since 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq, President Barack Obama orders the withdrawal of all troops.
The President welcomes them home.
"The war in Iraq will soon belong to history," Obama says. "Your service belongs to the ages.
"We are leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people," the President also says.
The return of U.S. soldiers fulfills Obama's campaign pledge in 2008 to end the war.

Anybody who has to ask that question must be an 0bummer sycophant.
ISIS is 100% the fault of President Obama and liberals in this country.
This is indisputable.
Obama’s version of “Mission Accomplished” except for one thing, the media is burying his failure and the blood on his hands.
We let the Liberal media gain power and influence to the point that they could elect a complete idiot. An idiot so stupid that he isn't smart enough to realize he's a fool, and that he's in way over his head.
And as a result of the media tampering with elections, the blood is on their hands. I hope they are brought to an accounting one day.
I personally would like to see a hard working guillotine in Times Square.
“nonpartisan Middle East Institute.”
Non-partisan? I do not know whether to laugh or cry.
Not even a whiff of a suggestion that Obama mishandled the situation.
May have something to do with the left turn (we) took in 2008...
“ISIS is 100% the fault of President Obama and liberals in this country.”
Yes, but in Obemba’s eyes he looks upon the situation as, “ISIS is 100% the ‘accomplishment’ of President Obama and liberals in this country.”
Its safe to say that terrorists are no longer an army without a state.
O basically handed them their state and NOW he will force the rest of the world to deal with them AS IF they are the equivalent of other states and, as if THEIR leadership is the equivalent of other duly elected leaders in the world.
I am sure it wont be long before O demands that ISIS is represented in the UN.
That is certainly a crime of universal magnitude and at the very LEAST, its a crime against humanity, for which O will NEVER be charged or prosecuted.
Our President is a heartless, blundering, unprincipled animal who has NO business at the head of the most powerful national entity on earth. There are generations of ME inhabitants who will suffer and die before the situation is rectified in any way ... Generations will live (and die) to regret that O was EVER our President.
And all because NO ONE will challenge the American President who made it happen!
Translation: Don't put the blame where it belongs (OBAMA) - the Liberal Progressive Policy to leave Iraq without a forces of arms agreement.
Bush, and then Obama.
Ask Dick Cheney. He predicted it all when he was against invading Iraq before he was for it.
“Iraq: How did we get here?”
One word, containment.
If we choose to take out Saddam in 1991 when we had the opportunity, we don’t have this. We may not have first WTC bombing in 93. Bin Laden might have been killed and Al Queada torn apart.
Instead we chose to leave Hussein in power.
That’s why we are here.
We could stay there a 100 years and the outcome would be the same as soon as we left.
I just hope that when they get a bomb(s) we can survive another 100 years.
