A Hancock County sheriff’s deputy escaped a brutal attack by three men Monday night thanks to the help of a K-9 named Lucas. Investigators believe had it not been for his four-legged partner’s intervention, the deputy likely would have been killed.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at a rural rest stop near Pearlington, Mississippi, less than five miles from the Louisiana border, when Deputy Todd Frazier noticed a blue Lincoln Town Car with no license plate occupied by a single individual who was sitting completely in the dark, The Sun Herald reported.

When I first saw this story the other day, it sure seemed like a set up to me. That area of southwest MS and southeast LA is pretty remote being between Waveland, MS and Slidell, LA. I know it well and traveled over that section of Hwy 90 for many years so it sure seemed suspicious to me. Lucky the LEO had the door release option to let the pup out. Dogs are awesome. We just had to put ours down yesterday and it really sucks. Proud of Lucas for saving his partner.

Sounds like they should have two man patrol cars in that area..

Referring to that area as a “rest stop” is overly generous.

Yeah. Diagnosed with a big growth in his left lung 5 weeks ago. Vet gave him 1-2 months and he made it to 5 weeks. I knew yesterday morning when he got me up at 4 that it would be the day. He was rescued on the freeway in Abq by my sister who really didn’t need another dog so we took him. He must have been abused as a pup because he was terrified of eveything. We were proud to have been accepted by him as his “pack”. We think he was about 12 yrs.

According to the sheriff, there wasn’t a dash cam in the car. Hancock county isn’t exactly flush with cash so a second deputy seems unlikely. If you’ve ever been in the area where the ambush occured, trust me, it is pretty remote/desolate.

LOL! No doubt. Pull off the 2 lane road on to the shoulder. There used to be a gas station just across the state line on the LA side where we’d stop for gas on the way to work. Pearlington wasn’t much of a “town” back then. Probably still not. I’ll have to ask my grandson who lives in the area.

That is such a shame. You and your sister are to be applauded, for rescuing him. Know that you gave him a great life, and took great care of him. And, that when the time came for him to leave, you were able to do that one last thing for him..you minimized his pain and let him go.

Wonder where they got the idea for the remote control rear door for the dog?

Yeah, but it’s been a rough go yesterday and today. Keep waiting for him to show up and share breakast. We have an upslope area on the south side of our property that he used to love to go and “patrol” the fence line and we call it Dasher Ridge. We’ll spread his ashes there.

Sorry about your loss. I had to put down four German shepherds in three years, three due to cancer.

We’ve had overlapping dogs for the last 30 years and this is the first one that there wasn’t an overlap. For some reason, maybe because this poor guy was the most timid and scared pup we had of the three. For a 60 pound dog, it crushed me that someone must have abused him as a puppy to break his spirit. Since my sister rescued him on the interstate, we knew nothing of his background. He accepted us but would hide if someone he didn’t know came in the house. Since this was by far the roughest one of the three we’re not leaning on getting another one. We’ll make efforts to increase our support of the local animal shelter with food and treats when we can. Thanks for the note. It is much appreciated. Mrs. rktman posted his loss to her FB page and the notes we got from so many is precious to us. Sorry you had such a bad situation with your sheperds.
