Russian Navy Future Leader Class Destroyers To Be Fully Nuclear-Powered

According to ITAR-TASS citing a source in the defense industry, Russia’s Defense Ministry has amended a technical assignment for developing the Leader-type missile destroyer for the Navy, which will have a nuclear power unit as the sole option.

"The Navy’s command has given up the development of the Leader ship with a gas turbine power unit. In accordance with the amendments in the technical assignment approved by the Defense Ministry, the conceptual designing involves only one option with a nuclear power unit," the source said.

This decision is prompted by the need to have an offshore maritime zone ship that can sail to unlimited distances, he said.

The Severnoye design bureau in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia is preparing the technical design, which is expected to "be completed in 2016," the source said.

The Leader-type destroyers are set to replace Project 956 and Project 1155 ships. The Russian Navy intends to order 12 new destroyers, six for the Northern and six for the Pacific Fleet.

Sources in the defense industry told TASS news agency the industry was ready to develop reactors for new destroyers but a nuclear power unit would cost more than the gas turbine version.

The cruise missiles Caliber and Onyx or their modifications, as well as S-500 air defense systems capable of destroying targets in outer space, were previously mentioned as possible armaments for the Leader-type destroyers.

A source in the defense industry told TASS the Russian Navy could get the next-generation lead destroyer no sooner than 2023-2025.

Using nuclear power to propel a warship certainly has a lot of advantages in maintaining a world-class blue-water navy. With less need for fueling stations strategically placed around the planet, and able to produce their own fresh water on board the ship, the major reason to stop to take on supplies is for food, and various janitorial supplies as needed. Clothing is a more durable sort of goods, and replaced only at much longer intervals. The big deal would be on-board morale, and the beatings will continue until the morale improves.

Or the captain gets thrown overboard.

Nuclear power plants in something as small as a destroyer? Okaaaay.

Ability to travel great distances without refueling. Great. But how about consumables for the crew? Still going to need to make port calls or UNREP.

Oh, and what long range missions will destroyer class ships take on by themselves? What about the rest of the fleet units?

Nice idea if you want to be perceived as bad-backside but I'm having a hard time seeing the practicality of it.

Yes. This is why Hillary took money from the Russians and approved the deal to give them American uranium.

It is possible Russia and the USA will be allies again.

Because they've done such a great job producing submarines with nuclear propulsion plants...

Everything on paper, in the meantime they can’t run a real Navy.

Nuclear power will certainly give them cruising range, but how will speed compare with a turbine power plant?

Well, at least it will become more difficult for foreign spies to tell destroyer sailors from submarine sailors.

It will, however, make it impossible to completely "darken ship" when most of the crew is glowing.
