What Ivy League Affirmative Action Really Looks Like — from the Inside

Asian Americans have finally had enough. They’re tired of working harder, achieving more academically, then having that held against them as they try to fulfill their educational dreams in our nation’s most elite universities. To gain entry into top private schools such as Harvard or the best public schools such as the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, no one has to do better than Americans of Chinese or Japanese or Korean descent. To make room for black, Latino, and — yes — white students, deserving Asian Americans are pushed aside. And they’re tired of it. So last week a coalition of more than 60 Asian-American groups filed complaints with the Department of Justice and Department of Education, alleging systematic racial discrimination in college admissions. They’re right, of course. Colleges do systematically disadvantage Asian students, and the problem is worse than they imagine. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Years ago, before I became a full-time constitutional lawyer, I taught at Cornell Law School — an Ivy League school and one of the top law schools in the country. My second year on the faculty, I served on the admissions committee, and I saw firsthand how not just race but ideology distorts the admissions process. Ivy League admissions are one part meritocracy — the students are quite bright — and one part ideological engineering. And if Americans broadly understood how the process works, support for affirmative action would diminish even further.

I recall recruiting for a major company years ago and was told that anyone who was not black I recommended was 'DOA'. These were bright students from UT Austin and A&M.

Instead, the company decided to recruit from predominately black universities - Level III and IV schools instead of Level I schools.

Needless to say, that company is no more as it populated its ranks with inferior personnel.

It’s a national disgrace. I saw them drop like flies in both college and business. Some of the stories I privately hear from those who sit on “diversity committees” are outrageous, laughable.

This crap should have been stopped from inception. The hypocrisy stinks up campus and boardroom. “No person” means exactly that “no person” You earn it or you don’t get it. No excuses. 40+ years is plenty of time to prove we were right from the get-go. It’s nothing more than political payoffs and CYAs for tenureds or pols seeking votes, along with a cowardly media. Anyone who believes in “Affirmative action”: prove it and give up your own positions or promotions and Little Darlin’s admissions. Your oxen are the ones needing to be gored.

In reality the Democrats resent Asians because they’re not following the program of being victims and relying on the party for everything the way Blacks and Hispanics do. Yet, for all their book smarts most Asians are politically stupid and vote for the Democratic Party by heavy majorities. The Dems don’t mind their votes, but since Asians aren’t an important voting bloc in that party they can be mostly ignored.

Asians vote for liberals who institute affirmative action policies, then they want to be exempted from the side effects. If you vote liberal you deserve what you get.

Exactly correct. Government institutions should be colorblind.

Private institutions should be able to do as they please. It is a basic right of association.

No one should be forced by the government to associate with those who they do not wish to.

I’ve never had any doubt at all that the most militant bigots are leftists who despise any deviation of thought or actions.

The very same leftists that asians vote for.

What this should tell us is that the “elite” Ivy League schools are no longer places of higher learning. They’ve been taken over by the leftists.

I meant the leadership of the party resents them and doesn’t go out of their way to woo them yet the Democrats still get their votes. Either way Asians get what they deserve for voting Democrat.

That’s the way it is with most liberal groups -
they vote for the “feel good” of how the issues are presented,

but then seek to exempt themselves from the negative consequences.

The affirmative action equivalent in banking and finance was the Community Reinvestment Act. The Act was passed based on the purely fictitious liberal study called "red lining" which purported to claim that banks discriminated against people who lived in an area outlined in red on inner city maps. Ostensibly, anyone who lived within this gerrymandered area was denied a mortgage based on where he or she currently lived.

The Community Reinvestment Act required banks to relax their time tested mortgage lending criteria of down-payment (normally 20%), employment history (3 to 5 years of unbroken work experience) and income (annual income from all sources sufficient to pay off the loan in 4 years or so). If an institution could not demonstrate an increase in loans outstanding to previously unqualified borrowers they were subject to substandard ratings from the government's regulators.

Fast forward to the years 2007 and 2008. Substantial numbers of these so-called sub prime mortgages defaulted leading to severe liquidity problems in most major banking and mortgage companies along with an unprecedented increase in the number of property foreclosures seriously impacting their financially strapped homeowners.

The result of another well intended liberal government initiative.

ALL of the Korean radio stations in Los Angeles give ONLY the liberal point of view. I know several Korean pastors and have educated them on conservative Christian politics. It was all new to them. The Korean media people evidently emulate their liberal counterparts on the mainstream media network shows. Maybe the Korean media people are hoping to jump up to a mainstream position or they just want to be accepted into the “in crowd of liberal media people.

Asians tend to vote Democrat.

There is probably some positive stereotyping of Asians as all being high achievers, and all from strong families, etc. Those who fit that stereotype might be mostly in the 28% or so percent who vote Republican.

They definitely are over-represented in some positive categories, but that would still be a minority of their total population.

On every job application I put African American. If you put “do not wish to respond” they assume you are white and toss your resume. If you put white, they toss your resume.

So I put black and when confronted, say I am from Africa, therefore I am African American. They have no idea what to say.

It’s about time Oriental Asians stand up for themselves. They have to be careful that Muslims don’t wrap themselves up in their cause of equal rights.

Currently Arab Muslims are named “white.” It should stay that way for Asians. In Europe they call Arab Muslims “Asians.” Arab Muslims are not the sharpest knife in the global drawer and it is to the Asians’ disadvantage if they get lumped together in quotas (which are illegal in most states anyway) with Isis.

Maybe we should start another round of voter initiatives in the States to ban the latest liberal efforts to harm whites and Asians via denying them equal rights in opportunity.

The root of the problem is Asians themselves - they’re honest, hard-working, study hard, get good grades, learn masses of information with poise and aplomb, and refuse to take shortcuts.

In other words, they simply haven’t got a clue about the true nature of American higher education.

Pakistanis, Indians, and Bangladeshis in the UK are classified as Asian, as they are in the US. Because Americans (and most European countries) have decide to classify Semitic peoples (Jews and Arabs) as "white," you have the situation that you do. I've never heard of any country with a sizeable Arab population classifying them as "Asian."

Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, etc. are as "white" as Africans. We even used to have laws banning Asian immigration for that reason.
