There are ways for a train to go into emergency stop without human intervention, if the conditions merit.

If some thug threw a fairly big sized rock that blasted through the window of a moving train and knocked the drive out....the Yankees need to find this thug and sign him to a ten-year contract as a starting pitcher.
Knowing this short of rock trowing or brick trowing does happen one would think that the builders of those engines would have put bullet proof glass or plexiglass on those windows.
Bird trikes happen all the time on those engines I have seen it my self while riding in one of those engines.
The newer Acelia Trains should have bullet proof glass or plexiglass in those windows.
This is BS, they are covering up something.
Amtrak would not knowingly put glass windows on those that would brake or shatter.
The windows on the passenger cars are bullet proof or plexiglass..

This engineer did not pass out from a head injury.
The only way a rock or brick could have hit him in the head is if he had that side window open.
Going 106 miles an hour you do not want that window open.
Where is the X-rays and hospital proof that he was hit in the head with something ?

A servalance camera will prove whether a brick could have came through the window or not.

A brick or rock coming through that window even at 50 miles an hour would have seriously injured him or killed him.
His story does not hold water.

A lot of speculation happens since Germanwings last month when he won’t allow the NTSB to speak with him.
Windshield is most likely made of bullet proof material or plexiglass.
Those engines experience bird strikes every day.
Remember, the engineer never said he was hit by anything, he only said ( lawyer most likely told him to say that ) that he doesn’t remember anything.
It doesn’t matter whether he recalls anything or not. Once they download the black box, it will tell them everything they need to know.

if he fell asleep, then just say it....its an accident...
if he was doing something else and not paying attention, its a whole different story....

and besides, are we to believe that this was the first time this engineer took that route?....that he didn't know about the curve or the speed limits?....

if a brick was thrown by a human being with the train going that fast the windshield would crack but I doubt the brick would go any farther....
