He was busy doing something he shouldn’t have been, that’s for darn sure.

So, are you presuming that the speed limit on the sections for track BEFORE you get to the junction where the crash occurred is OVER 100 MPH ? I ask, because I don't know. I think it would be important to know that.

It looks like the speed limit for the stretch before the curve was 110mph reducing down to 70mph as the train approaches the curve and 50mph on the curve. It looks as if the train was doing 106mph, according to NTSB. They have not said yet, at what point, 110mph zone, 70mph zone or 50mph zone, it was doing this speed.

Both good points. I’d be surprised though, if the speed limit was anywhere near 100 when it had to drop to 50 shortly, but I could be wrong.

As for making up time, I hope to heavens that isn’t it.

There little likelihood that he had to slow down to get to the junction. the junction is three miles from my house and maybe 6 from 30th street station. i’ve taken trains to new york. they go slow for the most part until they get out where there ain’t nothin. I think he was accelerating the train just like descending into a mountain in a plane.
