Health exchange considers higher fees as federal grants end

Denver -- The state's health exchange is looking at more than doubling the fee that insurers pass onto customers who buy policies.

The Denver Post reports Connect for Health Colorado staff recommended the increase Monday as $177 million in federal startup grants come to a close and as insurance carriers prepare to submit their rate plans by May 29.

If the health exchange board approves the 3.5 percent charge for premiums, the fee for a $4,000 yearly plan would go up by $84. Staff also recommended upping a monthly assessment charge for 1.2 million private insurance policies to bring in $2 million more.

The plan is expected to come up for a vote next week and would boost revenue for the exchange by $5.8 million.

They are just trying to figure out how to add more public employee hogs to the trough! Like everything government touches, it’s not about delivering the service, but rather how those who are supposed to be delivering it are going to fare.

The “participating” insurance companies are in a pickle. They have to submit their rate plans for 2016 before the end of this month and the Supreme Court is due to issue its ruling on King vs Burwell in June. That decision may well eliminate subsidies for those enrolled in the federal exchange and that could well affect the national makeup of the participants (those with the most severe and expensive ailments would be the ones most likely to stay in without subsidies. The Insurance companies could take a well-deserved (IMHO) financial bath for their desire to participate in Obamacare.
