If migrant kids leave detention, moms would stay behind, Justice Dept. says

Federal officials are threatening to split up mothers and children if they’re forced to dismantle three family detention centers holding nearly 1,000 migrant women and children, most of whom said they fled violence in Central America.

U.S. Department of Justice lawyers will try to negotiate a way to keep the facilities open after a federal court in California concluded that the Obama administration’s use of family detention centers violates an 18-year-old court settlement regarding the detention of migrant children.

Federal attorneys acknowledged the family detention system could collapse if the ruling stands.

The practice of family detention has reached a tipping point. Multiple lawsuits against family detention have been filed in California, Texas and the District of Columbia. Advocates for the mothers say it’s unlawful to detain children with their parents in jail-like facilities.

The government has dug in its heels, arguing that it needs greater flexibility when detaining parents who are considered a flight risk but also that it needs to send a strong message to Central America that it’s not OK to cross the border illegally.

They don’twant to stay without their parents, according to that kid’s sign, deport them back to their home. It’s the compassionate thing to do.

Deport, deport, deport.
And when you finish with those in custody, we’ll find some more.

Agreed. Keep them together on their return trip south.

needs to send a strong message that it’s not OK to cross the border illegally.

That’s called deportation. Not housing in the US. So the topic of separation of family members is not the issue at all. It’s just an irrelevant distraction. That’s what happens when dishonest.

I’m pro-illegal (well most of them). But dis-honesty is not the way to solve this issue.

Nothing but garbage about “breaking up families.”

CBP will provide transport for the entire family.

“We Don’t Want To Stay Without Our Parents”. There ya go. The solution to the NAZI ‘RATs complaint that we can’t deport all of them. Send the parents home and the offspring will follow. Sounds like a deal to me.

Just send the whole family back. Problem solved.

Why can’t they go with their parents? After all they are also citizens of whatever country their parents are citizens of.
