50 years ago, the song 'Satisfaction' was born in Clearwater

he pool is still there. It's shrouded by palm fronds and heavy gates, but it's there. Stand on Pierce Street, beyond the walls of the Fort Harrison Hotel, and you can hear families splashing, even smell the chlorine.

Close your eyes and picture this pool a half-century ago. Picture the Rolling Stones, then a scrum of scrawny Brits in lounge chairs...

Depending on the legend you believe, it was here, 50 years ago while in town for a concert on May 6, 1965, that Keith Richards and Mick Jagger wrote (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. It's the Rolling Stones' signature song and one of the most enduring rock singles ever recorded.

Richards supposedly composed that one-of-a-kind riff while half asleep in his sixth-floor bed, and Jagger banged out those eyebrow-arching lyrics in 10 minutes by this very pool.

This bit of rock history is worthy of front page status.

I’ve driven by there hundreds of times. I used to like Clearwater and the gulf coast in the late 60s.

No more. The Florida of John D. MacDonald is just a pleasant memory.

During the Super Bowl XL halftime show when the Stones were performing Satisfaction, a friend's daughter asked why those old guys were covering a Britney Spears song.

"No way am I that old."

The very first time I heard that song I was riding with my dad in his 62 Dodge 2-door on a summer Saturday morning.

I was 8hrs old.

He turned it up and was tapping his fingers on the wheel. I started to say something and he "shhuuush'd" me.

When it was over he said "these guys are going to be bigger than the Beatles".

I didn't even know who the Beatles were then, but I knew who the Stones were lol

Type in “Rolling Stones” in the station input field at Pandora.com, and watch the Cialis adverts show up in the side column.

In further news 50 years ago in 1955, the microwave oven was invented though this achievement pales in comparison to a couple hundred words

And who would have ever guessed they would still be touring today. I remember a long time ago John Lennon said the Stones would be around playing for the next 100 years. He may have been right lol

I know I know.

Just like the wimmins throw their depends instead of their panties now.

But, have you ever been to a Rolling Stones show?

When they're in a groove they are STILL the Best Rock and Roll Band in the World.

Those kids today can't hold a candle to their musical talent.

Keith Richards was interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine when they were rehearsing for their "40 Licks" tour in 2005.

He said the toughest part was culling down the set list from the 300 songs they had performance ready.

300.

They've never been the best. In their prime they were overshaddowed by a group which featured both lead guitarist and drummer in the top ten all time best and the number one best bass guitarist of all time, as well as a little front man who could really scream.
