>> Is he there to demand land for his people? <<

Probably not. I imagine his main purpose for visiting is to line up customers and/or supply sources for the scrap metal business — which is practically a gypsy monopoly in Romania and neighboring countries.

I did not know Gypsies were Muzzies. It makes sense now why they have the reputation they do to this day.

Didn’t know there were any Roma in Israel at all. With the great variety of skin colors and colorful dress, it wouldn’t be impossible to walk right past a Roma and mistake him for an Armenian, a Circassian, or a priest of some sort.

On his first visit to Israel, Cioba, who is president of the International Romani Union, plans to visit the Roma community in Jerusalem as well as the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial... Gypsies were targeted by the Nazis during World War II and estimates of the number who were killed range between 220,000 to 1,500,000... The Gypsies [in Israel] are Muslim but do not identify as Arabs or Palestinians... They have Jerusalem residency, but not citizenship, similar to the majority of east Jerusalem Arabs. Jerusalem's Gypsies trace their roots back 1,000 years to northern Iraq, where a powerful tribe known as the Bnei Murra lived. A bloody war with a neighboring tribe -- according to legend, over the death of a beloved camel belonging to the daughter of the tribal chief -- scattered the tribe across the world. Some went to Europe, converted to Christianity, and became the Roma Gypsies. Others traveled across the Middle East and became Muslim. Gypsies arrived in Jerusalem along with the Muslim conqueror Saladin in 1187, and fought against the Crusaders... lived on the slopes of the Mount of Olives for hundreds of years, in what today is part of the A-Suware neighborhood. Following the Six Day War, many Gypsies fled to Jordan. Others moved out of their tents into cramped apartments in the Old City. There are Gypsy populations in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

Irish Travellers (also Gypsies):

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Irish Travellers (Irish: an lucht siúil) also called pavees, tinkers or gypsies, are a traditionally itinerant ethnic group who maintain a set of traditions.[1][2] Although predominantly English speaking, some also use Shelta and other similar cants. They live mostly in Ireland as well as having large numbers in the United Kingdom and in the United States.[3] Their origin is disputed. Around 10,000 people in the United States are descendants of Travellers who left Ireland, mostly during the period between 1845 and 1860 during the Great Famine.[4] About 2,500 of them live in Murphy Village, a community outside North Augusta, South Carolina.[5]

Travellers refer to themselves as Minkiers[6] or Pavees, or in Irish as an Lucht Siúil, meaning literally “the walking people”.

Travellers are often referred to by the terms tinkers, itinerants, or, pejoratively, knackers[7] in Ireland.[8][dead link] Some of these terms refer to services that were traditionally provided by them, tinkering (or tinsmithing), for example, being the mending of tinware such as pots and pans, and knackering being the acquisition of dead or old horses for slaughter. Tinker and especially knacker is used as a pejorative against Travellers in Ireland.

The term gypsy first appeared in record in the 16th century from the continental Romani people in England and Scotland mistakenly thought to be Egyptians,[9] who arrived in Britain. Other names, specifically derogatory, such as pikey[10] and gypo or gippo[11] (derived from Gypsy) are also heard.”

It'a wonder that so many of us survived to be freepers!

Back in the day, if you were bratty or did something wrong, your mom would tell you that you'd better behave or "the gypsies would come and get ya!"

Funny, growing up in a sleepy white-bread suburban village (and to this day), I never saw a single gypsy (and I REALLY wanted to see one....I thought of them as being rather exotic and dancing around blazing campfires in the dark of night !)

Their language is rooted in India:

“Romani is the only New-Indo-Aryan language spoken exclusively outside of the Indian subcontinent.”

I did not know Gypsies were Muzzies.

Only the ones in the Middle East are. The ones in the U.S. and Europe are mostly Catholic or Greek Orthodox.

According to Wikipedia, both the Christian and Muslim Gypsies are descended from Hindus.
