DEA agents left college student in cell for five days, receive light punishments

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents who left a 23-year-old UC San Diego student locked in a holding cell for five days without food or water received only light punishments, according to the Justice Department.

In a Friday letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa), the Justice Department revealed that, of the six DEA agents involved in the near-fatal incident, four received letters of reprimand and two were given week-long suspensions without pay.

In 2012, DEA agents detained University of California San Diego student Daniel Chong following a raid on his friend’s house, where Chong had gone to smoke marijuana. The agent told Chong he would be released following an interrogation.

Instead, Chong was left handcuffed in a windowless holding cell by himself for five days without food, water or a toilet while agents ignored his cries for help. When an agent finally opened the door to Chong’s cell, Chong was delirious and so dehydrated that he had resorted to drinking his own urine. Chong was hospitalized for four days following his release and had to undergo extensive therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The government later agreed to a $4.1 million settlement with Chong to avoid a lawsuit.

In the letter the Justice Department further said while protocols and procedures were changed following the incident, the Department "has serious concerns about the adequacy of the discipline that DEA imposed on these employees..." It further said that failure to impose serious discipline "demonstrates the need for a systematic review of DEA’s disciplinary process..." which former AG Holder recently directed (read: paper shuffling with no real action forthcoming).

The kid should have been dead after 5 days with no water, he was lucky his body kept producing pee

This was dreadful callous disregard for human life. $4.1 million was not enough and these guys should be out of work

The DEA and ATF are the trailer-park trash divisions of federal law-enforcement agencies.

Attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, unlawful arrest. Take your pick. Criminal behavior that deserves serious jail time and a serious ass whooping.

I agree. With the worst punishment being suspension it’s no wonder that people think that cops are abusive and aren’t held appropriately accountable.

The kid was locked in a cell for 5 days without water for smoking some pot. These agents need to have the book thrown at them.

Hey people, the NDA essentially gives blanket authorization for just this.

You ain’t suing squat because the leftist courts will say you have no “standing”.

Time for people to realize that federal bureaucracies like the DEA are nothing more than state-sponsored terrorist organizations.

Get off your butts and elect a pro-2nd amendment, Constitutional sheriff in your county, and crap like this won’t happen. An elected sheriff has the legal and armed muscle to take on federal fascist pigs.

DEA... Possibly the only Federal LE agency as incompetent set the ATF. If they’d done this to my kid I’d hunt them down with dogs.

I fully believe the DEA is lying about this being an oversight. A boo boo, if you will. They intended to punish the man because they didn’t believe the court would. How did all the government agencies get so worthless? Every one of them. And they heard him in there.
