Ferguson mulls removing Brown shrine from middle of street

To some, a makeshift shrine in the middle of the Ferguson street where Michael Brown was killed last summer is a hallowed symbol of a new civil rights movement over race and policing. To others, it has served its purpose and is now more of an eyesore and a road hazard.

Within hours of Brown’s Aug. 9 shooting death by a white police officer, people began placing stuffed animals, candles and other tributes in the middle of Canfield Drive, where the unarmed black 18-year-old’s body lay for about four hours before it was removed. […]

Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III, while appreciative of the memorial’s status as a nexus of protests and prayers, said it is now a public safety issue that comes with “any time you leave items in the middle of the roadway.” Knowles, who is white, pointed to last Christmas Day, when an unidentified motorist—whether intentionally or accidentally—plowed through the shrine. Neighbors and Brown supporters swiftly cleaned up the damage and rebuilt the site.

Now, Knowles said, “the city would like it moved,” adding that “we’re working on getting a buy-in with the family and community” to make it happen. He said no decisions have been made and there isn’t a deadline to decide the matter.

During a Ferguson City Council meeting last month—the first since city elections tripled black representation on the governing board that had been largely white—(Janie) Jones proposed replacing the shrine with a permanent dove-shaped marker embedded in the street. …

Where you have older children, make current events part of the dinner table talk. Be quick to point out left-wing slanting of news, TV or radio broadcasts. There is far more of this slanting than most people realize.

The Naked Communist, 1958
This screed is most exemplary of not just a mere “slant,” but an open festering pile of propaganda.

Maybe if they let his mother set up a t-shirt and souvenir concession kiosk there she'll move the so-called shrine. Worth a shot, as it were.

Even though the cop was proven innocent. It's like if the left makes a claim, that's the truth and no amount of facts are going to change it.

Cops are out daily hunting black youths and probably have killed several thousand. We should put a shrine everywhere they dropped.

I am beginning to think certain Gays and Blacks need attention and the majority of them do not .

I have no doubt they want attention. What bothers me is that our ‘leaders’ in government are so willing to give it to them.

Okay, since they’ve got the ball rolling for memorials now - let the neighborhoods they’ve burned and destroyed remain exactly as they are in perpetuity as a memorial to the dead businesses, senior centers and communities that were sacrificed in the riots. Don’t touch a thing. Let them live with the consequences. Seems only fitting.

I would of told them to get it out of the middle of the road of it within a day or two of the shooting, if they didn’t It would be removed and deposited in the local dump.

I have no problem wit that. Leave everything as it was once the rioters left, trash cans, burned out cars, burned and looted businesses, etc. if they while tell them they made the mess they can find a way to clean it up.

A raven would be more appropriate.

A pile of trash in the middle of the street to mark the ending of another pile of trash - in the middle of the same street. Seems appropriate.

Buy in ?

Hah...he is closer to the truth than he probably knows...

The pile of crap in the middle of the road is called leverage...

Wonder what it will cost the city to get the family to “buy in”

Mere facts can’t be allowed to hinder the righteous work of God’s avenging angels.

I suspect that the buy in will be highly dependent upon the pay out.
