I respectfully disagree, I think it’s a terrible strategy because Gov. Walker won’t hold it- and when he backpedals, he’ll lose credibility.

I’m for Sen. Cruz- But, I admire Walker’s conservative record, and I am not flaming him. Just talking political strategy.

Exactly right. I notice also that Noah Smith is an assistant professor of finance at Stony Brook University.

I'm sure we could import someone to do the job for less.

right, and just to take one of the fallacies in this professor’s piece:

propostion: japan is failing because it restricts immigration.

****first, japan is not failing by any standard. japan’s economy is not growing for the same reasons we are not growing. in two words. monetary policy; also japan’s oligarchic gov’t and ruling class elite is leftist thus true innovation is difficult in japan. note: not production along gov’t approved channels. that is very easy in japan.

inference: immigrants are the innovators, the entrepreneurs and that’s why japan is not growing and why there are no jobs. wrong again professor. japan has the best educated work force in the world bar none (unlike our workforce graduated from our federal schools). there just isn’t any new work for them to do because of their leftist gov’t’s policies of economic stagnation and zero population growth.

just like our gov’t to a lesser extent. the differnence here is that our elite is replacing our skilled, educated workers with cheaper lesser educated/skill/experienced workers in the same jobs (forgeting that it is from the pool of experienced workers that our inexperienced workers acquire the skills and experience in our culture to grow it economically. that is the crucible of innovation and growth in our our economy, and it is being replaced by low and mid skill legal and illegal immigrants.

in the aggregate: imported, low skill workers have added very little to our culture or economy when compared to what was home-grown. they simply subract or at best hold the status quo. (the cream of the crop, assimilable immigrant is of course the exception and very desirable. i’m sure scott walker wants all of those hard working types he can bring in for us.)

thus, it is arguable that japan, as stagnant economically as it is, is in far better shape than us as a society, *because* of it’s restricted immigration policy.

Economics exists to serve humans.
Humans don't exist to serve economics.

Yep. Economics is an abstract means, like math, by which markets operate, and they operate by human supply and demand for goods and services.

Regulated, taxed, politicized markets are subjects of the force of government. Government is all and only a force, "a dangerous servant and a fearful master." Humans are to be served by government. When it gets too large, it becomes their tyrannical master. Limiting government is the ONLY way to revival.

It is time to remove ALL the illegals and put a decade hiatus on immigration of all sorts - 3 month tourist visas only and go get them when they overstay more than, say, 24 hours.

Yes, we should limit immigration — not to protect American jobs, at least not overtly, but simply to retain the culture and keep immigration to those whose skills are truly needed in our country. (And those genuinely escaping repression.)

As stated by someone who:
a.) doesn’t understand how economics works.
b.) is involved in the theft of middle class wealth through corporatism.
c.) is strictly trolling.

Choose one.

If there really is a need for skills brought by “temporary” foreign workers, they should be brought in as regular immigrants who would then be able to freely choose who to work for. The wages of “temporary” foreign workers on visa are artificially depressed by the fact that they are not free to look for work elsewhere.

Also, the argument that these companies would hire these people in India if they can’t bring them here is bogus, IMHO. All these companies (the larger ones, anyway) have campuses in India already. They’ve learned that foreign employees can be hard to manage with the difference in time zones and the distance (expensive travel), and also that Indian employees’ priorities aren’t always aligned with those of the company. They’re trying to have the best of both worlds by taking the cream of the Indian information worker crop, bringing them here where they can be properly monitored/managed, and still pay them more in line with what they would in India.

I have no problem with competing against Indians in India (with the issues that go along with that), or legal permanent immigrants who can demand the same kind of pay as those who are native-born. I do have a problem competing against virtually indentured workers brought here by these companies to save a buck.

They have a dang gym and sports to replace work and producing anything of value to society.

You're right, but hey, at least they have something. It shows a desire to apply discipline and drive, even if it's just at the gym.

I believe in Americans, I really do, even LEGAL immigrant Americans, and some illegals to boot, so sue me. America is a fabulous country and it generates a particular kind of person -- an American, no matter what, and they're not even aware. But even the most leftist Obama-supporting God-fearing minority charity worker is uniquely American.

I think Americans, set free, would do pretty impressive things.

The USA has about 4.5% of the world’s population. Given the opportunity, how much of the remaining 95.5% of the world would move here? Even if only 5% of the rest of the world moved here, it would more than double our population. But my guess is that the actual number is way, way higher. Not everyone has the opportunity, thankfully, but more do every year. Even if the professor was entirely correct on the economics, we the people would still have the right to decide how many people immigrate to the USA and who they are, and the impact of the number and identity of immigrants on our culture and public safety are perfectly valid reasons for doing so. I give Walker a lot of credit for having the guts to say this, as it is completely off the GOP Establishment script.

I'm with ya, pal -- I will ONLY vote for what I want, and I want CRUZ. No others need apply.

But ...

When you talk about voting "against," you're talking about a unicorn. And you're also taking a defense position.

OFFENSE is where Cruz is. I'll be voting FOR what I want, because voting FOR is the only option there is on any ballot, anywhere.

Of course you have a point, but the adrenaln running at the gym and the sports addiction is still a huge component of the “me” generation accelerating and the increasingly the only replacement available for what used to be actual and real work. The strictly entertainment culture rules, with no real contribution or traditional value to family, community or broader society.

You know our chief contribution is about buying and selling money.

I’m reminiscing of course of the agrarian society, where boys became men on the farm, in factories, steel makers and artisans producing bread for the neighborhood, leather makers, meat for the city dwellers— when we use to produce more than shoelaces.

The loss of the trades plunged us into hell, morally and even religiously. We have never been quite the same, but, who would know of the losses with all classical education long dead and buried. My tagline still works. LOL!

Have faith. The Lord works His wonders in wondrous ways, and faith can move mountains!

Noah Smith is a wet-behind-the ears academic with no experience in the real world who supports amnesty and unrestrained immigration.

When he finally grows up and sees the real world, let’s hope he gets his head on straight.

I know ... Walker can only serve as a spoiler now, and the only way he could convince me that he truly had America's interests at heart, would be to announce that he's supporting Cruz and putting his own bid on hold at least until 2020, he's still young.

Otherwise ... he's just a spoiler. If he'd announced first, if he'd made his positions so crystal clear on so many issues and principles by now or all along like Cruz, maybe I'd feel differently. But Walker has been circumspect on too many things, whereas Cruz -- on OFFENSE, is consistently concise and declarative, advancing his position, advancing conservatism in every good way possible.

Why on earth folks are even pondering Walker at this point ... perplexes me.

Cruz to victory and freedom.

Just so EVERYONE is aware, there are dozens of paid GOPe boosters on Free Republic and many have been here for years.

They are an extension of the Chamber of Commerce.

Of course there's many true believers that are unpaid as well.

But on the issue of immigration, legal and illegal, the knives will be coming out.

Their principal goal will be first to take out Scott Walker and his supporters. Their secondary goal will be to heap ridicule upon "protectionists who don't understand economics", undermining their credibility.

They will show themselves. Just know it when you see it.
