Bell Helicopter announced today that it will lay off 1,100 employees.

The Fort Worth-based helicopter company has a location on Pont Des Mouton Road in Lafayette, according to the company's website.

The company did not release specifics on which locations will see layoffs, but the communications director did say in a news release that the reduction in workforce will apply to all areas of the business, both management and non-management, and covered and non-covered workers.

In addition to its Pont Des Mouton location, Bell Helicopter broke ground in August last year on an 82,300-square-foot aircraft assembly center near the Lafayette Regional Airport.

Lindsey Viotto, a Bell Helicopter spokeswoman, said the $26.3 million facility will not be impacted by the layoffs.

Citing declining production of its V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft and a soft market for commercial helicopters, Bell Helicopter announced plans Tuesday to trim 1,100 jobs from its global workforce, the latest in a series of cutbacks for the Fort Worth-based manufacturer.

In a memo sent to employees, John L. Garrison, president and chief executive officer, said the company had anticipated the commercial market would rebound this year, but that hasn’t happened.

Why did they anticipate that? Because CNN told them?

Bell should have seriously gotten into the personal helecopter market.

Henry Ford sold a gazillion cars in any color you wanted so long as it is black, and I think today's consumer psychology is a ripe, untapped market for simplicity

The 'lectric car didn't work, but THIS might

Other than the fact that helicopters are the crankiest machines in the air or in the maintenance shop, of course.

A lot of people can barely drive. Imagine the collisions. Not a whole lot of jams but a lot of scrap metal and scorched patches though.

Oh, I could imagine; they’d be issuing licenses to illegals who had been driving burros a week before (just to sell more mini-helicopters).

True story: An Indian friend went home to visit his family in India for a month, and he made a point of getting his drivers license there. When he returned, he explained to us that NJ would issue him a license because he already had one. He was given a NJ license without EVER DRIVING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD.
