Leaders with the Student Government Association at Youngstown State University said they decided to act quickly this week when posters showed up on campus promoting “Straight Pride” week next month.
The posters contained profanity, which our station has blurred for viewers. The posters promote the event as a way of not showing the differences between students.
Campus leaders said while they believe the posters were meant more as satire, especially since no names were associated with them, they determined the flyers went too far with their message.
“When you are talking about minority activism, it is very easy that if you are in the majority to say ‘well, this sort of activism is not necessary. This sort of zeal in your activism is over the top.’ For minorities who experience discrimination, that is not the case,” Student Government Vice President Jacob Schriner-Biggs said.
After consulting with the Vice President of Student Life, it was decided to take the posters down, not necessarily because of its topic but because of the coarse language.
“We have to be careful with the whole free speech issue. But then if you actually read through it, it seemed like it went way further than a free speech issue. There were swear words and took it a little further than the average free speech should go,” Student Government President Michael Slavens said.
Once students received permission to remove the flyers, they were all down within a matter of hours. If those behind the posters can be identified, any disciplinary action will ultimately be up to university administrators.
The Student Government Association Executive Committee released a statement on the fliers, which said in part:
It has been brought to the attention of several SGA Executive Board members that “Straight Pride” posters have been hung across campus, seemingly in response to LGBTQIA efforts to promote diversity and foster a culture of acceptance on campus. Though SGA respects the free speech of all YSU students, these postings were not authorized, contained vulgar language, and, unfortunately, miss the point of minority activism.
It’s not what they wrote, it is how they wrote it.
I.e., form over substance.
Well, that is a first in our beloved institutions of freedom of thought.
If it is any consolation, I imagine that they would probably vote to poison Socrates too, if he were to show up on campus.
Why don’t they step on the gay flag for a few days? The college would certainly support that.
So now we have "Campus Leaders" determining what we can and can't read?
Including the profanity wasn’t very clever.
Personally I could imagine going further than that.
Heck, call it something catchy, like the “Free Speech Movement.”
Reading this article left me asking,
Why is the “zeal” of one group over the “zeal” of another group? If group one can be provocative in their speech, because they are minorities, does that mean they are entitled to a more liberal interpretation of the law/rules, etc?
Well, I had to up the resolution on image of the flyer, but really...I don’t think the vulgar language was all that vulgar or offensive.
Looks like only 1 word was used twice to make the point.
People getting upset over the profane language are using it as an excuse to censor Freedom of Speech of others.
Exactly. They handed them an easy excuse to take them down.
Yeah... a state university went on full alert because a poster used the word, “$h!+” Not buying it.
Swear words and profanity have no place at Youngstown State University. The young scholars just don’t talk that way.
Profanity is verboten in a setting where the word "F***" is used at the drop of a hat and the use is defended? Screw the complainers.
Just more “educators” with their heads in the darkest of places. Haven’t they read the Constitution and Bill of Rights?
The point isn’t about the profanity being offensive. It’s that it gave the campus lefties an easy excuse to take the posters down.
