Bet he had a small dog. Coyotes have been known to grab small dogs, even with the owner standing right there.

We are lousy with coytes here in GA. We had one take a run at our Chihuahua one night. I just scooped her up and flashed the flashlight on the coyote. It faded away into the darkness. A couple of weeks ago we had a Bobcat come out from behind a bush and come at the dog. The crazy dog was trying to attack the Bobcat. Mr. GG2 almost had to draw down on it.

I’ve heard of them attacking toddlers.

So many areas of the country with these problems - ‘wild’ animals attacking.
Well, encroaching civilization has displaced them.
They also raid the trash at the curb.
Trash barrels have gotten a bit heavier, with fairly good closing lids. Rarely have a problem with trash.

We can hear the coyote pups crying in the hills, about one-quarter of a mile from us, and we are in a large housing tract with homes about 50 years old. Housing tracts all around.
Right now, an owl is hooting from a high tree right next door!

Sometimes it feels like ‘Us Vs The Animals!’
