A member of the House of Lords has said the Republic of Ireland should consider rejoining the Commonwealth.
Lord Diljit Rana said Ireland needs to have a rational and serious debate that must not be governed by historical distortion, but rather recognize the truth of today and recognize that the Republic of Ireland has much to offer and lots to receive. [ ]
Ireland left the British Commonwealth in 1949 under the terms of the Republic of Ireland Act.
Lord Rana said there would be no disadvantage to the Republic joining the Commonwealth and that the economics benefits of being a member can be seen in Northern Ireland, where India is now the second biggest provider of foreign direct investment, the Irish Times reports.

Nice try; it is Irish PEOPLE, not organizations.
That skews things further.
Catholic England was already establishing English "plantations" in Catholic Ireland (Henry II and the Normans). Even Catholic hero Queen Mary did it.
At any rate, modern Irish nationalism is not ancient Irish nationalism. Modern Irish nationalism is the product of the "enlightenment" and the French Revolution. Wolfe Tone and most of the early Irish Republicans were Anglo-Irish nominal Protestant or "dissident" non-believers who considered religion to be troublesome and divisive. Not until much later was modern Irish nationalism associated with Catholicism.
Today all the Irish Republican and "nationalist" organizations are thoroughly left wing and often downright Communist. Sinn Fein, Republican Sinn Fein, the Workers Party (formerly Official Sinn Fein), the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, and the Irish Republican Socialist Party are all pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, and rabidly anti-Catholic--yet naive Irish Catholics abroad support them, very much including the "pro-life" Ancient Order of Hibernians, whose real job is as a Sinn Fein front group.
You may visit each and every one of these organizations' web sites and see exactly what they stand for.
And by the way . . . why are leftists so hopped up on the sovereignty of an ancient nation on its ancient land? I thought they believed that "the international soviets will be the human race." Now they're "nationalists?" Why do they deny the same national sovereignty to the United States that they demand for themselves???
Let me know if you ever discover a group promoting authentic ancient nationalism (with restoration of the ancient Irish monarchy).
