Sen. Marco Rubios splashy presidential-campaign announcement and his subsequent media blitz has likely helped him catch up with friend and former mentor Jeb Bush in their home state of Florida, according to a new poll of 400 registered Republican voters.
Rubio garnered 31 percent support from Republicans and essentially tied Bushs 30 percent, according to a Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey conducted Tuesday through Thursday and shared exclusively with POLITICO. The other likely and announced presidential candidates polled in the single digits and 17 percent were undecided.
I think Rubios rollout was pretty good and he probably got a bump out of it, said J. Bradford Coker, Mason-Dixons pollster, who began the survey just after Rubios Monday announcement. A good rollout is like a primary win: you get about three days of good media coverage and a little lift in the polls.
The Mason-Dixon survey is the first to find Rubio tied with if not beating the former governor. The polls margin of error is 5 percentage points, an indication that the two are essentially neck-and-neck now.
The poll is significant because it indicates Bush might be weaker than expected in Florida, a firewall state for the former governor who had good poll numbers when he left office in 2007. Bush served two, four-year terms. During much of that time, Rubio served in the Legislature and was his ideological heir. Compared to Rubio, Bush has more institutional and financial support in Florida, which plans to hold its winner-takes-all presidential preference primary March 15.
But the poll results dont really surprise some top Florida Bush backers who watched Rubios Monday announcement at Miamis Freedom Tower with a mixture of awe and dread.

Rubio supported the Corker Iran deal for Obama...right there Rubio on foreign policy should be eliminated from any potential list for POTUS...oh and also that little thing called amnesty which he joined the Gang of 8 traitors on.
I think you get a BINGO.
If it has to be one or the other, I’ll take Rubio.
I’ll take Ted for the win. Marco the sell-out would lose to Hillary anyways.
I’m not voting for any amnesty traitors. Period.
Good. Let Rubio play spoiler to Bush.
RE: Good. Let Rubio play spoiler to Bush.
Let’s not forget we have Rick Perry waiting to announce in TEXAS.... how’s that going to affect Ted Cruz?
Methinks Rubio is bad news for the Jebster. I don’t see how being even now with 100% name recognition can be a good sign for Jeb.
Wait’ll they get a load of Rubio’s tax plan. Ugh.
