Nearly 10 years of travel for a few hours of close up observation. Then on to the Kuiper belt.
Kinda hard to stop once it got going (to get there in a reasonable timeframe).
When the project was staffed, ages and health were taken into account. They didn't want anybody retiring/expiring before the encounter.
