Netanyahu to Putin: S-300 missile sale to Iran undermines Middle East

PM tells Russian leader that the move would only serve to increase Iran's aggression and put the security of the Middle East at risk.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that the sale of S-300 anti-missile systems to Iran would only strengthen its aggression and undermine the Middle.

The two leaders spoke by telephone on Tuesday, just one day after Russia ended its five-year ban on the delivery of the anti-missile system, which would help strengthen Iran against a military attack.

Russia that in light of the framework agreement between Iran and the six world powers to curb Tehran's nuclear program, the ban was no longer necessary.

“The sale of advanced weapons to Iran is the result of the dangerous agreement that is emerging between Iran and the [six world] powers,” Netanyahu said.

“After this arms deal [for the S-300] is there anyone who can seriously claim that the [framework] agreement with Iran will increase the security in the Middle East,” Netanyahu asked.

For over a month Israel has warned that the framework agreement reached in Lausanne, Switzerland earlier this month would strengthen Iran militarily.

Israel was particularly concerned that sanctions against Iran would be lifted before results were achieved.

Nuclear talks between Iran and world powers will resume on April 21 at the deputy level, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday, in what will be the first meeting since a major breakthrough two weeks ago.

A final accord with Iran will only be reached in June, but already Russia is rolling back some of its sanctions and is also now allowing an exchange of goods for crude oil.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon [Likud] said that Moscow's S-300 deal with Iran is "something we have been warning about even before the details [of the agreement] were concluded. It was clear, even then, that sanctions will be lifted, and that of course this will influence and strengthen the Iranian economy."

Putin told Netanyahu that S-300 missiles had only defensive capabilities and did not pose a threat to Israel, according to the Kremlin.

But already on Monday the US, which along with Israel has long opposed Russia’s sale of the S-300 to Iran, said they were concerned by Russia's move.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday urged countries which imposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program to keep a unified approach to removing them.

”I urge people to lift those sanctions together, as far as possible,” Merkel said.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it was too early for Russia to reward Iran.

Meanwhile, Ya'alon said, Iran continues to arm elements around Israel, particularly Hezbollah in the North, while supporting combat in Syria, and the Houthi-Shi'ite takeover of Yemen.

"This issue was not discussed at all, and this is one of the biggest holes in the agreement. It is outside of the framework agreement, and this is certainly very disturbing. I hope that there will be time in the coming months to fix this," said the defense minister.

Iran continues to activate terrorism against pro-Western Arab regimes, support elements in Iraq, work against Israel, and transfer weapons to Syria, he added. It has already sent tens of millions of dollars to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza after last summer's conflict to help them arm themselves, due to their inability to smuggle rockets or other weapons into Gaza, the defense minister continued.

"We continue to warn about the bad agreement that is developing with Iran, which does not include terrorism, missile components, or the military dimension of the Iranian nuclear project. Hence, we are against this bad agreement."

Hey, if I’m Putin, and I see 0bummer and Hossface peeing all over themselves trying to make a deal with the Ayatoilet in Iran, I wanna throw some crap into the cakemix just to see if they’ll still eat it.

Putin has always enjoyed throwing the match into the powder shed to watch the fireworks. What better way to dust the US and Israel with one swoop and have the stupid Ayatoilets do it for him.

As soon as they make the predictable stupid move, US and Israeli subs will launch devastation onto Iran.

Presto!

Putin makes his biggest headaches disappear with one stroke. The only thing left to contend with at that point are the Chicoms, and he might be able to goad the stupid Norks into taking care of that for him.

Must be nice to be sitting where Putin is, these days.

Must be nice easily outsmarting the stupidest, most inept State Department in U.S. history.

Putin and Medeved knew they had Obozo when the dumb @$$ leaned over on hot mic and whispered, “I’ll have a lil more latitude after the election”.

Boom! The Ruskies just gained the proof they needed to determine two things. Obama is weak kneed leader and is willing to sell his country down the river.

Check-mate-ski

Didn’t Israel do a number on Syria’s S300’s a few years back?

But Marie Harf said just yesterday

The transfer of the S-300 missile system to Iran would not violate existing United Nations Security Council sanctions.

S-300 is of limited use in a siege situation.

You can aim relatively cheap cruise missiles at the S-300 launch batteries and they will be forced to take out each one with a missile.... they will soon run out of very expensive missiles... then you drop the bunker busters or neutron devices.

S-300 is useful against a weak foe who cannot overwhelm them with targets that must be destroyed. If you had many hundreds of S-300 missiles it would have some real value even against a very well armed foe... Iran will not have many S-300 missiles. For S-300 to be useful against US or Israeli strikes you need a nearly limitless supply of them.

Send in the drones and cruise missiles...then send in the jets.

I would suggest that Russia actually doesn’t want to support this nuclear deal but won’t outright veto it. I think this was a poison pill from Russia to support Israel’s position. Yes, Iran is a Russian Alley. No, Russia does not want Iran to have nuclear capabilities.

Poor Bibi. It must seem like the entire world is against Israel at this point.

Now that we’ve abandoned her, is there any country that is her ally?

Canada still stands with Israel, but in the end Israel will stand alone, the bible says it’s so.

Seems like all these activities today are lining up with revelation. It is a good time to make sure one is right with God.
