The cop must be out of it. I can tell firearms apart, even pretty similar ones, by touch, and nobody's life relies on me being able to do so.

Even if the feel and heft were similar enough to get them mixed up, wouldn't he be cognizant of where he keeps his gun and taser in relation to one another? Wouldn't he notice that the it wasn't yellow/partially yellow before wrapping his booger-hook around the trigger and giving it a squeeze?

Senility is not an attractive trait in police officers.

While the deputy is subduing Harris on the ground, a gunshot rings out and a man says, “Oh, I shot him. I’m sorry.”

I read this story this morning. The “cop” was 73 yrs. old, and his real job is an insurance executive.

He thought he fired his taser, but it was his gun.
Watching the video, it didn’t seem like a taser shot was needed at that point in time.

I’m not going to excuse this, but if you’re in the heat of the moment and you’re having to think in micro-seconds, you may not be able to differentiate what you’re grabbing.

Having said that, why is a 73 year old man on the street trying to take down a man in his prime? He should be a support position or an instructor, not on the street. He’s a danger to himself or others around him.

This has happened before. The force science institute studied this.

Taxes need to be carried on the opposite side from the firearm.

Tulsa Police Sgt. Jim Clark, who investigated the shooting at the request of the sheriff’s office, concluded that Bates had been under the influence of a phenomenon known as “slips and capture,” which occurs when a person’s behavior “slips” off the intended course of action because it’s “captured” by a stronger response.

Sort of sounds like liberal BS to me.

That’s not manslaughter, that’s murder.

Yes, we know.

It’s been covered here already in numerous posts.

Actually, the number of murders in Chicago has been on the decline and is the lowest in at least 40 years.

This case in Tulsa is just an old man playing cop and murdering a man.

Why is it that the government is all about “proportional response” in everything except policing? Maybe we should let the police run the military. The Middle East would look like the surface of the Moon in days.

But seriously, I’d like to know how any reasonable person can think that even an incredibly fit 73 year old person has the reflexes and mental speed and agility of someone even 20 years younger. I don’t believe that this person meant to do this and certainly it will probably ruin the “golden years” of his life even if he “gets off” legally.

This would not be my first choice of work post retirement.

“Sort of sounds like liberal BS to me.”

And, they have a psychological expert to testify to this effect on contingency, ready to go to trial.

What a way to die... flat on the ground with a cops knee on your neck. Note to self, shoot first.

I’m looking forward to an explanation of why a 73-yr old reserve deputy was involved in a violent arrest.

“BUT what about all the non-whites in Chicago getting murdered and shot in Chicago each day?”

Exactly. When blacks kill other blacks, it is no big deal. But, when a white, especially a white cop, kills a black, noooooo it is the end of the world and all hell breaks loose.
