Sounds like he will be sued personally, as well as the jurisdiction who let him play policeman. Usually, there’s no point in personally suing a cop for civil damages, because he isn’t wealthy on his own.

I, uh, I thought it was a...
uh, ...Taser!
Yeah!
I thought my gun was a Taser! That’s the ticket!

Mr Bates could then be heard saying: "Oh, I shot him. I'm sorry." What? No "oops"?
Is policing in Tulsa so mundane and so boring that any boob with a big bankroll can buy his way on to the force and without training become a genuine peace officer? Talk about inept. This is the height of stupidity. And unfortunately Bates will probably walk on this.

Tulsa gave him a uniform, badge & gun?

By the time he caught up Mr Harris was already subdued on the ground by other officers... Never mind his claim that he thought his .38 pistol was a a taser, in a situation such as that described, why would the guy even think it was appropriate to shoot a subdued suspect with a taser?

It’s crazy to let wannabe cops like this guy ride along. He had no business being there.

he donated equipment, including cars and guns, to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department in Oklahoma. Mr Bates had also been the chairman of the Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz's election campaign in 2012.
"cleared of wrongdoing by his force"? If ever a case screamed for outside investigation, this is it.

A white septuagenarian police reservist... ...has been cleared of wrongdoing by his force In all seriousness, perhaps an objective, independent entity needs to review this case.

As he lay dying Mr Harris could be heard on the video screaming: "Oh, God. Oh, he shot me; I didn't do s---." Another officer replied: "You f---ing ran. Shut the f--- up."
Mr Harris then said: Im losing my breath." An officer replied: "F--- your breath." Some other cops need some retraining.

A spokesman said: "He (Mr Bates) isn't the only millionaire we've got. You have to remember, this is Oklahoma. Its their way of giving back. Nobody would criticise if he gave to the Red Cross." They would if he shot someone at the Red Cross.
To: Responsibility2nd
He became involved in a chase for suspected drug dealer and weapons supplier Eric Harris, 44, on a suburban street near a Tulsa supermarket on April 2. Seriously? Was Harris on crutches?

I remember in the first few months of the George W., administration, there was a charitable organization that supported military families that had allowed a large donor to take the wheel of a submarine when it was surfacing and it surfaced under a tourist ship filled with Japanese tourists, killing several. I didn’t know you could pay to do such a thing, or pay to be a cop wannabe. Pray that the wealthy never take an interest in ICBM’s.

The dept may have found no wrongdoing, but the wanna-be has apparently been charged with 2nd-degree manslaughter nonetheless, if Twitter is anything to go by.

Putting oneself into the position of the police being the judge, jury, and executioner is not too smart. Interesting how certain groups of people, a sub-culture of all groups continues to play this very dangerous game. It’s a self fulfilling situation.
