Florida Ex-Senator Pursues Claims of Saudi Ties to Sept. 11 Attacks
The New York Times ^ | 13 April 2015 | Carl Hulse

The episode could have been a chapter from the thriller written by former Senator Bob Graham of Florida about a shadowy Saudi role in the Sept. 11 attacks.

A top F.B.I. official unexpectedly arranges a meeting at Dulles International Airport outside Washington with Mr. Graham, the former chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, after he has pressed for information on a bureau terrorism inquiry. Mr. Graham, a Democrat, is then hustled off to a clandestine location, where he hopes for a breakthrough in his long pursuit of ties between leading Saudis and the Sept. 11 hijackers.

This real-life encounter happened in 2011, Mr. Graham said, and it took a startling twist.

“He basically said, ‘Get a life,’ ” Mr. Graham said of the F.B.I. official, who suggested that the former senator was chasing a dead-end investigation.

Mr. Graham, 78, a two-term governor of Florida and three-term senator who left Capitol Hill in 2005, says he will not relent in his efforts to force the government to make public a secret section of a congressional review he helped write — one that, by many accounts, implicates Saudi citizens in helping the hijackers.

“No. 1, I think the American people deserve to know the truth of what has happened in their name,” said Mr. Graham, who was a co-chairman of the 2002 joint congressional inquiry into the terrorist attacks. “No. 2 is justice for these family members who have suffered such loss and thus far have been frustrated largely by the U.S. government in their efforts to get some compensation.”

The Saudis were involved, but I don’t think at the highest level of government. They were doing just fine with their infiltration tactics—mosques around the USA, supporting radical imams proselytizing in prison, and the long-march plan involving Barry Soetero’s education and political support.

Respectfully, I disagree. I’ve spent a little time in Saudi Arabia as a guest of a man that talked to the King on a regular basis (25 years ago). Since all there was to do over there was sit around his posh home and drink and talk I learned a lot. (Yes, the “connected” rich people have all the booze they want.)

The fact is that the King could reign in these 700 odd “princes” any time he wanted to. But, he doesn’t. These princes that contribute billions to the terrorists need to be held accountable as their involvement enabled those planes to be flown into the buildings.

You’ve got close up experience which I respect and am trying to factor in to my guess on how things went down.

You say that the King could have suppressed the activity and didn’t. But, what you don’t say is whether or not he had transparency of what the various princes who answered to him were up to.

The top dogs were clearly OK with slow infiltration, favoring Wahabbism over friendly conduct towards a protecting, paying ally. However, it’s not clear, even from what you’ve said, that the King (or someone near his level) knew what Osama and the mad Egyptian Al-Atta were up to with respect to 9/11. So, it could have gone on without their implicit or explicit approval. Or am I missing something?

Yes, I believe you are. The guy I was staying with had to “sponsor” me just for me to visit “The Kingdom”. “The Kingdom” is not a democracy. All power lies in The House of Saud. So, effectively, it is a dictatorship. What naturally flows from that is “police state”. My guy, very much in a position to know, says that “anything” significant is known by The King and his inner circle. Thats how they maintain CONTROL. Nothing but Nothing could be more “SIGNIFICANT” and possibly cause “The Kingdom” more grief than flying airliners full of people into buildings full of people in Washington and New York. So, they knew about it in advance. But, they also had James Baker and both Bushes in their pockets too which led to lethargy in trying to STOP these bastards.

Now, what you may be alluding to is that The House of Saud is not a “happy place”. Ancient and deadly enmities are still just under the surface. Princes are paid off with billions. So, whether the King could do anything about it is indeed an open question.

In my book though, he knew and after the fact George W. let key players fly out of the country due to his families allegiances to The House of Saud. Sure George may have been dismayed by it all but “he knew” the minute it happened that Wahabbi Saudi’s were probably involved. And, except for the dead attackers, no one paid any price, that we know of.

Both Georges I’m sure, walking around the ranch away from microphones and ANY witnesses likely just shrug it off as “well, we did what we had to do “for the country”. Meaning, they let all those Saudis fly out and they covered up what really happened.

Not beyond the shadow of a doubt, in fact the large streams of data which occur on a regular basis on the internet make it borderline impossible to track down every person, even by the Saudis, and even by the Feds. However, it does help to punish people who do get caught (Facebook posters, bloggers, etc) and deal likewise. As good as tech gets, there always needs to be people around to prioritize and analyze data, keywords can be outsmarted, people can simply not use the internet or cell phones if they please, and even then, you have to sort through and do confirmations on which cell phones do what. It reaches the same point as saying we could have shot down hijacked planes before they hit the WTC on 9/11/2001. Even dictators aren’t God, and even they can’t see everything. FWIW, there are public bombings in Saudi Arabia that even the government there can’t seem to prevent, despite them being a dictatorship.

FWIW, a number of the hijackers were all in Germany, as well as the United States, at the same time, and could have even done some coordination there.

Thanks for your insights.

I’d like to think that Jamie Gorelick’s Chinese Wall might have had something to do with it not being stopped, but that’s what I’d like to think. Your scenario is depressingly plausible.

You are quite welcome.

Sorry, I don’t get the part about “Jamie Gorelicks Chinese Wall”.

Look up Jamie Gorelick to find some interesting things.

She was a powerful Democratic operative in the Clinton administration.

She put in the rule that prevented the FBI and other intelligence agencies from sharing information that they had, which might have uncovered the 9/11 plot before it took place. It was part of the liberal ethos of the time. So GWB inherited agencies that didn’t communicate with each other the way the used to in years past. That’s the item I was referring to.

She also got herself a high appointment at Fannie Mae and walked away with a huge bonus ($25 million, IIRC) for “good performance” as Fannie Mae was eagerly gobbling up crappy mortgages that the banks were urged to make by the government, but that’s another story.
