Drugstore chain Walgreens Boots Alliance will close 200 stores as part of a plan to cut $1.5 billion in expenses over the next three years....

Walgreens is closing some U.S. stores at a time when the company is reporting stronger results for its domestic retail pharmacy business. That division, which includes Walgreens and Duane Reade stores, posted second-quarter sales of $21 billion, up 7.4% from a year ago. Same-store sales climbed 6.9%....

The media is passing this off as minimal....but if Bush were still President, there would be interviews with people weeping about being laid off.

Were they the ones that stopped selling tobacco products?

Would be interesting to see how/if it affected the sales, which were up, but also the store closings.

No, that was CVS. The CVS that climbed into bed with Obama.

Not sure. CVS did.

I find it funny that these stores won’t sell tobacco, but in states where they are allowed to do so, they sell booze.

200 stores? That’s only about the number of Duane Reades in any six-block square of Manhattan.

Yeah I’ve been to NY a few times and it seemed like there was a Duane Reed every 2 storefronts. It’s like Starbucks in Denver. There’s a Starbucks on almost every corner in downtown Denver.

Manhattan is basically made up of bank branches, Duane Reades and Starbucks at this point.

Makes sense, what with sales being up and all. Time for the execs to get third vacation homes.

I did a short ill-fated contract rollout gig for them through an organization that should have known better but cut corners. The second time in my life that I recall walking off the job.

CVS quit selling tobacco products, and then started charging higher co-pays for their CareMark customers that went outside of their network of drugstores to buy their prescriptions, to cover the cost of lost tobacco revenue.

CVS cites health for stopping the selling of tobacco products, but is more than happy to give out the abortion drugs that kill people - quite telling of their agenda. Of course, follow the money: This was really done in order to cash in on the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), which allows insurance companies (i.e. their CareMark)to charge up to 50 percent more in premiums for smokers.

Take a look at the Attorney Generals who intimidated Walgreen, Walmart, Kroger and Rite-Aid,to follow the totalitarian agenda of the Obama policies...some Republicans amongst them:

“This letter was tyrannical. Voters should be reminded that many of these attorneys general are up for reelection this fall. The attorneys general signatories are:

Republican Michael Geraghty of Alaska
Republican Tom Horne of Arizona
Democrat George Jepsen of Connecticut
Democrat Beau Biden of Delaware (the Vice President’s kid)
Democrat David Louie of Hawaii
Republican Lawrence Wasden of Idaho
Democrat Lisa Madigan of Illinois
Republican Greg Zoeller of Indiana
Democrat Tom Miller of Iowa
Democrat Janet Mills of Maine
Democrat Doug Gansler of Maryland
Democrat Jim Hood of Mississippi
Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada
Democrat Joseph Foster of New Hampshire
Democrat Gary King of New Mexico
Democrat Eric Schneiderman of New York
Republican Mike DeWine of Ohio
Democrat Ellen Rosenblum of Oregon
Democrat Kathleen Kane of Pennsylvania
Democrat Peter Kilmartin of Rhode Island
Democrat Robert Cooper Jr. of Tennessee
Republican Sean Reyes of Utah
Democrat William Sorrell of Vermont
Democrat Robert Ferguson of Washington

In addition to these 24 states attorneys general were the attorneys generals for Puerto Rico, Guam, the North Mariana Islands and the District of Columbia. All of them should be voted out.”

Thank you for your post, particularly the information about the AGs intimidating the pharmacies. I wasn't aware of that story.

I notice among the AGs is Kathleen Kane of PA, my home state. She also refused to defend the state's ban on gas marriage, among other things. Right now, this amoral witch is under indictment, so with any luck she will be doing the perp walk soon.

If they would try competitive pricing on their non-pharmacy goods, they might see an increase in sales.

A bottle of aspirin costs about $3.50 at Walmart and $5.00 (on sale) at Walgreens. Their other grocery and non-pharmacy items are similarly priced higher than the local competition.

They did recently acquire a competing drugstore chain (about 20 stores) in Arkansas. Even so, they still have low customer traffic.

I went in Saturday morning to pick up some prescriptions. I was one of three customers in the store — on a Saturday morning.

I suspect this was part of the grand corporate plan. Ever since the wave of baby-boomer retirements started to crest, Walgreens and CVS have tripped over each other to put a store on every corner in my area. You can’t go a mile without passing a couple of each it seems. That is not a sustainable long-term business strategy in any economy, let alone the one that The One has perpetrated on us. As the needs of the boomers flattens out, store closings were/are inevitable.

Yes, in my area they are regarded as costly; their only benefit is being open 24 hours. In my area these are on the fringes of “food deserts”, serving as bodegas of sorts to the transient gibsmedat population usually spending someone else’s money.

According to the news releases, they are closing about 2% of their 8,232 drugstores [US, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands]. Walgreens has not yet revealed a list of stores scheduled to close, nor a timetable of closures.
