A power outage inconvenienced residents in Washington, D.C., and southern Maryland Tuesday.
According to The Washington Post, much of the area briefly lost power due to a piece of metal coming apart at a power plant. This outage affected public and private buildings alike, including The White House, the Department of Energy, and the Department of State.

As The Post reports, “a dozen people were trapped in stalled elevators passengers were left searching for exits in darkened underground Metro stations, and a building full of Department Energy employees and the main campus of the University of Maryland closed their doors.”
Firefighters freed 12 people from six elevators at the UMD campus in College Park, Md.

Of course, some speculated the cause of the outage was more dubious…
…while others had quite the sense of humor:
This guy even tried to capitalize on the occasion:
Terrorism and foreign parties did not have a role in the outage, according to U.S. officials.
Also affected were Oprah Winfrey and State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf. Winfrey was paying tribute to Maya Angelou for her new stamp at the Warner Theater, while Harf was giving the daily briefing at Foggy Bottom.
I wish the lights would have stayed off in the White House.
No coal?
once obama’s epa crushes the coal companies more blackouts will happen
A bird landed on a line. Someone forgot to feed the hamsters. A friend came in from out of town. I’m not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.
Didn’t Valerie Jarrett say she was going to stay in the Whit House until the lights went out? Anyone check to see if she is still, there?
Maryland “Freak State” PING!

I would not have done well in these situations — claustrophobia.
Good one! We can hope, huh?
Naturally, the first thing that comes out of official Washington's mouth is "there is no evidence of terrorism" - like we can believe a thing word coming out of that Babylon.
