DUBAI — Iran sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday, state media reported, establishing a military presence off the coast of Yemen where Saudi Arabia is leading a bombing campaign to oust the Tehran-allied Houthi movement.

The Alborz destroyer and Bushehr support vessel sailed from Bandar Abbas on a mission to protect Iranian shipping from piracy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said in comments cited by Press TV.

Saudi Arabia and several Arab allies have imposed an air and naval blockade on Yemen as part of a two-week campaign to oust the Houthis, who have taken most of the country and forced President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to flee to Riyadh.

Do these Arab springs include provisions for an Arab groundhog as well?

Does the Egyptian navy have the guts to go toe to toe with the Iranian fleet.

Iran has no legitimate interest in that waterway — they will have to be hove off in a series of risky near miss maneuvers.

It’s the only way.

Actually it's not a destroyer, it's a frigate.

The Alvorz is a Alvand class frigate built in the 60's long before Iranian Revolution

Considering Iranian maintenance, it's more of a threat to the sailors on board than to anyone else.

If the ships make one threatening or bad move, the Saudi’s should sink them with their jets - not their navy.

Do they have the guts?

Will this start a mid-east war?

Only God knows......

Iran sent two warships to the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday

A skiff and a dinghy. And neither had both oars in the water ...

The Egyptian navy is considered fairly formidable by Middle Eastern standards and is close to home around Yemen. Iran’s navy seems to have a lot of smaller vessels and they are long way from home in the area around Yemen.

So here is my question based upon the experience my brother in law who had retired from the Air Force and went over to SA to train the Saudis on repair and maintenance of F-15s. He said that nothing really got done because the Saudis were always having to stop and pray 5 times a day (plus they were extremely lazy).

Based upon that how do these Arabs fight a sustained battle if they are stopping to pray 5 times a day?

Iran has been doing patrol against Somali pirates in the area. Youtube has a video about it.

Yea, but we shouldn’t touch it. Let the Saudi’s do it.

I ran let’s their puppets in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Gaza and Yemen do their dirty work.

We should let the Saudi’s do some of ours.......and stay out of it.......

The problem is that Saudi bakers won’t make wedding cakes for the Iranians.

The Iranian military is vastly overrated, especially air force and navy. Formidable land-based hardware and resources, but this will do them no good in Yemen.

Iranian navy has five to eight subs, for example, none of which can fire missiles.

This is just for show, IMHO.

They are there just for show.

They can tweak the Saudi’s/Egyptians/US without actually being a threat, but they have to be closely monitored, just in case they try something stupid.

Takes far more resources to keep track of them, than it does for the Iranians to send them out cruising.

Will take a whole lot less resources to sink them in five minutes—than to monitor them 24/7.

Egypt needs to step up to the plate. Send a good portion of her navy to secure Aden. Long ago the USA would do this or England—but that day has passed. Maybe Russia should move in?
