Police: Officer facing murder charge following shooting of suspect

The North Charleston police officer who fatally shot a 50-year-old man during a traffic stop on Saturday has been arrested and is being charged with murder.

North Charleston Patrolman First Class Michael Slager, 33, will face the charge in connection with the shooting death of Walter Scott.

That announcement came at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon from North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey who referred to a video someone recorded of the shooting Saturday morning.

The video had been sent to Scott's family and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, Summey said.

"As a result of that video and bad decisions made by our officer, he will be charged with murder," Summey said.

"It's been a tragic day," North Charleston Police Chief Eddie Driggers said.

Driggers said the video shows Scott "taking off" and the officer shooting the suspect.

Summey called the video "very demonstrative" and said without the video, it would have been difficult to resolve the issue. Summey said the city is trying to meet with Scott's family and will reach out to them any way they can.

Why would you run from the cops over a simple traffic stop for a non-working tail light?

While the city will be liable for civil damages to the family, those damages will be much lower because the city decided to charge the cop ratherthan defend him.

Read the entire article. This was a good shoot. The suspect engaged the officer in a pursuit during a traffic stop, fought the officer, and then tried to use the officer’s taser against him.

Police are now the criminals, I guess.

Doesn’t make any difference, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in 1985, in Garner v. Tennessee, 471 US 1 (1985) that shooting a suspect who was not an immediate danger to the cop or other persons is a violation of the person’s civil rights.

EVERY cop knows about that case.

If this continues, it won’t be long before municipal police are a thing of the past.

That’s when the new federalized police forces take over.

And when they do, there will be many more shootings, and every one of them will be “justified”, no questions asked.

Just like the STASI and the Gestapo before them.

“Police say an altercation then began between Slager and Scott resulting in a fight for the officer’s Taser. During the fight, Scott allegedly gained control of the Taser to use it against the officer who then fired his service weapon at the suspect.”

The U.S Supreme Court does not agree with you. See my post #8.

The police aren't Judge, Jury, and Executioner, and in this case he wanted
to be the executioner just to se what it feeeeelt like.

IMO, some police today view killing somebody as a right of passage, and
will consider themselves a victim for doing it. Then expect sympathy for
having to live with their actions. Sociopathic in every way.

25-Life would be a his best deal to avoid the tabloids.

Suicide watch for the next 2-years.

He assaulted the officer. That should have been the end of the story but not these days. I see at the end of the article the NAACP is johnny on the spot. Pinging Holder, Al and Jesse to load up the buses.

Cops sometimes lie, and the video proves it. Police Chief said the video shows the guy running away when he was shot.

The suspect engaged the officer in a pursuit during a traffic stop, fought the officer, and then tried to use the officer’s taser against him.

...

That’s quite different from what Garner was doing, which was climbing a fence to flee the police.

Waiting to see the video. This one doesn't look too good.

From that photo on Post 11 it certainly looks like a pretty awful shot (fat guy waddling away, no threat to no one) ... but from a marksmanship point of view -- looks like a pretty excellent shot given the distance. Too bad it wasn't just a paper target.

You’d have to believe the officer was telling the truth when he claims the guy fought the officer before the officer shot and killed him.

The cop lied about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, so you can’t trust what he claims happened prior to the shooting.

Nevertheless, once the guy startd running, he was no longer a threat; so the shooting was a crime. There is no other reasonable conclusion.
