Obama doesn’t want to prevent Iran from going nuclear - he just wants to give his followers enough talking points to say it isn’t his fault when they do.
He let the cat out of the bag when he said “I’ve been very clear that Iran will not get a nuclear weapon on my watch.”

His entire charade is planned to actually assure that Iran will complete the manufacture of their first nuclear weapon, but to delay their success until it can be blamed on his successor.
