(UK) Teachers 'fear debating extremism in class'
BBC News ^ | April 6, 2016 | By Hannah Richardson

Teachers are avoiding class discussions on Islamic extremism for fear they may have to report pupils to the police, a teachers' union says.

New counter-terror rules aiming to expose radicalisation require schools to report any concerns about pupils.

The National Union of Teachers says the rules are too heavy handed and stifle much-needed debate in schools.

The Conservatives said the guidance made clear that no teacher should feel unable to talk about sensitive issues.

A party spokesman said teaching about "fundamental British values" actively encouraged such discussions.

In certain circumstances teachers could also face prosecution if they failed to alert the police to any concerns they have about pupils.

Schools must also actively promote "British values" and are judged on how well they teach these as part of the school inspection process.

The teachers are probably even more concerned with their pupils reporting them.
In this politically toxic atmosphere, speaking put on any subject is a dangerous balance act.
It is indeed a problem.

“The teachers are probably even more concerned with their pupils reporting them.”

Wonderful. So in Western society we have to be worried about being ‘reported’ for what we say. If you aren’t a threat to the country you are living in, and aren’t associating with people who are a threat, then you should be able to freely speak without fear of reprisal. This sounds a lot like the USSR use to be.

You must have missed the announcement by the British government to the effect that they no longer claim to govern their own country. Those weren’t the exact words, but everything out of their mouths seems to be in line with that idea.

Yes, I missed that. Well, I guess that means they don’t need to be paid - since they don’t really have a functional role anymore..

Will the Brits ever going to wake up and kick Mus-SLIMES back to their old country? Hell, will we? We need to kick them out here.

I almost got into a fight with a Muslim guy on the beach. My wife (after 3 boys) was in a bikini... and a Muslim with his 'slave'(aka wife) looked at my wife and shook his head. He told me that my wife should be covered...I told him she was... it wasn't a NUDE BEACH.

Dream?

It's been the most successful conquest cult in history. 1,400 years and still a danger to the entire world.

The British people are disarmed subjects of the Crown which has decreed that striking a Muslim in self defence is now a hate crime.

Muslims in U.K. go where they please and strike where they please, including classrooms.

Demographics are different in the modern world. The whole problem is that the Islamic reformation is a desire to return to the days of which you speak.

Hundreds of thousands will not be able to overcome the hundreds of millions that like modern life and a diluted Islam

Complete tosh.

One, the British people are not disarmed. 2.3m of us are armed.

Two, and I constantly correct this, the British are not subjects and haven’t been since Jan 1st 1949. We are citizens.

Three, complete drivel that you cant defend yourself against a Muslim, or anyone else.

Why do persist in posting rubbish about the UK?. I KNOW you are an intelligent person.

There are several million UK Muslims, who have been here since the 50’s, and only a tiny minority are extremists.
Contrary to myth, the vast majority of them are decent, law abiding men and women of faith. And the extremism affects some communities, not all. For example, the Scottish Muslim communities have had no problem with extremism. Nor Wales and NI. And some English cities, but others have a severe problem.

Its the extremists we need to deal with. The majority are fine and are valuable allies in the fight against the evil in their own communities.

Interesting response. Are you suggesting that the actions of British officials at the local level are not being influenced by the Islamic invasion?

The gist of your critics is that British citizens do not enjoy the same protections of civil liberties as do Americans, and that Brits are on thin ice indeed if they criticize Islam or Muslims.

Who was that chap who was arrested & taken away for quoting Sir Winston Churchill about Muslims?

Tories have promised if elected to order British police to treat “Islamophobia” as a reportable hate crime.

And no more giving out of piggie banks by London banks because that’s offensive to Muslims.

ISIS has found some rich recruiting ground in certain U.K cities. Shall I go on?

1—That may be true (although open to debate), but there’s a difference between that and Islam running the UK. People in the UK wont accept homophobia, that dosent mean gays run the UK. False extrapolation.

2—Yes, that was a disgrace, hidden under the abuse of the public order act. He was released with no charge, which US critics didn’t follow up on btw.

3—Yes, a stupid move, which has received a national backlash this week.

4—Oh dear, not true. Another myth, sorry. Quite a famous one now, but not true.

5—Yes, sadly true. Something we are and need to combat. Again though, that is far from the UK being run by Islam.

Have I ever said here the UK dosent have an Islam problem?.

All I and the other UK freepers try to do is correct myths and errors and try to give a measured response to the UK’s problems, not denial, but trying to counter some of the myths that Americans believe about the UK and UK and Islam.

At a local level, people are scared of being accused of racism and islamophobia. They are not scared of Muslims, but more of white middle class uber-liberalism where they’d rather let crimes go unchecked than be called racist.

Insane to you and I (and to most muslims!, after all its they who warned police and local councils of the sexual abuse in their own communities), but there ya go.

I am most interested in the “acts” in British law which seem to intrude on individual civil liberties. For example,

Official Secrets Act

Public Order Act

Trade Description Act (made famous by Monty Python in their “Crunchy Frog” sketch.

Or the acts which overnight turned legally owned & registered firearms (handguns & semiautos) into contraband that had to be immediately surrendered to the police. And are British police required to secure a warrant before entering an Englishman’s home?

As for Islam, the threat by Lord Ahmed to surround Parliament with 10,000 angry Muslim men was not by any means met with a defiant Churchillian response.

Oh well, back to watching Mrs. Miniver and Dam Busters, stories of an earlier Britain.

1—I have no problem with the Official Secrets Act. Of course, UK govts have used it cynically, but overall its a necessary act. I have signed it myself.

2—The other two acts again I have no problem with. As long as the Public Order is abused by police, govt. Trade act is a very necessary act. Along with the 1979 Consumer Act, it protects the public from shysters.

3—I have discussed at length why the 1997 act on handguns was a bad bad law and why I opposed it.

4—Yes, they do. The confusion my arise because all UK police carry a ‘warrant card’, but that is just a police ID card. Its not a warrant.

5-And neither did Lord Ahmed carry out his threat. Perhaps its the British way just to ignore blowhards.

6—I am happy to recommend classic and current British TV and film, in any genre. I am a huge film buff and massive British film fan.
