Yep what strange names.
Decades ago, I went to school with a number of Negro students, as they were then known as Negro.
They had names such as Milton, John, Michael, Karen, Sheila, and Denise.
I never knew when or why black children started getting such unusual or made up names. Is it supposed to be some African pride thing?
I believe the idea is that names like John and William are viewed as slave names and this is their way of rejecting that past history. Tied in with that is the belief that Christian names are ‘white’ names.
I'll wager that it was about the same time when birth certificates started featuring the word "Unknown" next to "Name Of Father".

Nope.. Mulattoes trying desperately to rid themselves of whiteness...
A lot of it started with the TV mini-series Roots.
