Whites in the United States approve of police officers hitting people in far greater numbers than blacks and Hispanics do, at a time when the country is struggling to deal with police use of deadly force against men of color, according to a major American trend survey.

The survey should also ask, “Can you imagine a situation where you would strike an adult male.” I bet the percentages along racial lines would be reversed.
I am in complete awe that anyone, even a prison inmate, could not imagine situations "which you would approve of a policeman striking an adult male citizen?"
(This is from someone who is half a world and decades away from believing that "nice Mr. Policeman is your friend!")

Stupid poll. Leaves out circumstances. Better would be “Could you approve of an officer hitting a citizen who is resisting arrest? How about if the alternative is shooting him?”
Interesting thought.

Stupid respondents that simply can’t envision ANY situation under ANY condition that would make it appropriate for a police officer to strike an adult.

As asked, I can imagine it, and can also imagine situations for a Starbucks clerk or a school teacher, or a mailman.
Let’s put a real shoot no shoot scenario up, man raises a claw hammer to get ready to hit the baby he is holding in the head.
Do you shoot and probably kill him to save the baby or continue trying to use harsh language?
If you fail that scenario, you should not become a police officer.
And yes, those things are done in video simulations.
