Lord, how Easter's changed! Nothing better illustrates how much Britain's values have altered [tr]

The way in which we behave this Easter weekend is as good an indicator as any that this Britain is now an all but totally secular society.

How many people have you heard describe the past six days as Holy Week — even though that was what everyone, atheist or Christian, used to call it.

I can recall in my teens listening to an edition of Radio Four’s Any Questions on Good Friday. On the panel was a bishop, and a novelist and commentator called Marghanita Laski, an intellectual lady who made no secret of her atheist views.

Capitalism has done more to destroy the religous significance of Easter than the socialists. It is not the socialists who fill the newspapers and TV with ads for candy and “Easter presents”,and who use the Easter bunny as a sysmbol.Greedy merchants have sought to make every holiday into a reason to buy ,buy, buy more stuff, especially high-profit decorative junk that will be soon tossed.Socialists no doubt laugh at the capitalists who help reach the goal of making religion irrelevant.

The Marxist claim that a capitalist will sell you the rope to hang him is true.

Neither does much of America. It’s a secular holiday for millions of Americans.

I would’ve argued that point only a few years ago. But the recent developments (i.e. Indiana Religious Freedom Act for example) has me changing my mind. Big corporations use Christians when it benefits their bottom line.

True. Britain will become noticeably less secular come Ramadan.
