Prague - The first part of the U.S. military convoy, comprising 37 vehicles, crossed the Czech-German border in Rozvadov, west Bohemia, before 10:00 today, heading for the Vilseck base in Bavaria, 70 km of the border.

Some 500 soldiers on around 115 armoured vehicles crossed the Czech Republic during the "Dragoon Ride" to demonstrate support for the allies' countries that feel threatened by the Russian aggression in Ukraine. Story was, back in the 1970’s, a Pershing missile battery on the way to Grafenwoehr got lost and tried to cross the Czechoslovakian border, where they were politely turned away by a Czechoslovakian border guard. On another occasion a U.S. Army patrol wandered into a Czechoslovakian town, which they mistook for German. They entered a local Gasthaus, and ordered some Schnitzel und Beir. While they were dining the local constable showed up and told them they better get back to Germany before he and they wound up getting into a lot of trouble. I’m sure the publican appreciated getting paid in dollars and Deutschmarks.

Back in the ‘80’s I was on a convoy in West Germany headed for a washdown site. Our convoy commander was navigationally challenged. We drove far too long and eventually the German police turned us back as we were close to the East German border.
