Utterly ridiculous in this day and age. Personal locator beacons, satellite based, designed expressly for this,, are about 300 bucks. Nobody should spend more than a day or so this way.

Not every person lives in a perfect world. That's just the way it is. I agree with your assessment, but I also have to recognize the real world where people start trips with bald tires... Duh...
